Obituary for Dorothy Agnes Barker (Bailey) Dorothy B. Barker, 96, of Rockland, died Wednesday evening, June 27, 2018 at the Owls Head Homestead. She was born December 1, 1921 in Woodsville, New Hampshire a daughter of the late William S. and Agnes Elizabeth (Gilmore) Bailey. Dorothy grew up in St. Johnsbury, Vermont and was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy a member of the class of 1939 and received her Associates Degree from BayPath Institute in Springfield, Massachusetts.

After graduating from college, she worked for Thibert Lumber Company in Springfield. On March 28, 1943 she married Gilbert E. Barker in Springfield, Massachusetts and they moved to Maine. In 1953 they built their family’s home on Samoset Road in Rockland where they raised their two children and she resided for more than sixty years.

Early in their marriage, she worked with her husband at his lobster business until his death in 1966, when she went to work for McLoon Lobster. In 1973, she began her bookkeeping career with Shepard Chevrolet, and was a dedicated employee, retiring at the age of 76. Dorothy was an avid reader and enjoyed solving crossword puzzles.

Her love of gardening was evident in her beautiful flower gardens. She will be remembered as a quiet person who kept to herself, but still loved traveling making two trips to Europe. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a brother Robert Bailey.

Dorothy is survived by her son, William Barker and his wife Marian of Jefferson; her daughter, Barbara B. Hatch and her husband Lewis ‘Duffy’ of Cushing; three sisters, Mary St. Peter of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, Mildred Walters of Acton, Massachusetts, Catherine Armstrong of Es Junction, Vermont; a brother, Charles Bailey and his wife Sylvia of Springfield, Vermont; two granddaughters: Tammy Kolmosky and her spouse Lisa Sojka, Heidi Carroll and her husband Tim and two great-grandchildren: Jacob and Casey Carroll. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for a memorial gathering to celebrate Dorothy’s life, 4:00 -6:00pm on Thursday afternoon, July 5, 2018, at the funeral home’s reception center located at 104 Limerock Street, Rockland. Interment will be at a later date in the Hillcrest Park Cemetery, Springfield, Massachusetts next to her husband.
