He was born to Anton and Stephanie Kahlich on September 13, 1928 and grew up in Lindenau. After Cuero High School, he joined the U.S. Army and served his country honorably in the 45th Division Infantry in the Korean Conflict as a Sharpshooter.
Upon returning home from the service, he married the love of his life, Joycie Mae Hilbrich, on May 31, 1953. After several years in dairy farming, he changed career paths to banking working for Home State Bank where he advanced to President during his 30 year career until he retired. He also served as Justice of the Peace for DeWitt County Precinct 5.
He was a very active member of the Westhoff Community where he was a member of the Mueller-Schaffner American Legion Post 369 where he served as Treasurer; a member of the Westhoff Volunteer Fire Department, a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he also served on the Church Council, and President of the Westhoff I.S.D School Board. Additionally, he was a member of the Lindenau Rifle Club, The Cuero VFW organization, Hermann Sons Lodge and the Masonic Lodge. Among the past times he enjoyed most were playing a good game of dominoes, having coffee with the D.Q coffee bunch, and cattle ranching.
He enjoyed many bus trips to the Louisiana casinos, loved his trips to Las Vegas, and cherished seeing the World Series in California two consecutive years in a row. He is survived by his wife, Joycie; son, Kerry Kahlich and wife, Linda, of Seguin; daughters, Kaye Kahlich of Fulshear, and Kristye Kahlich of Cuero; grandsons, Zachary Kahlich and wife, Marisa, of Kyle, Jameson Kahlich of Atlanta, Georgia; twin great-grandsons Rex and Remy; and sister, Juanita Peters of Cuero. The family is very grateful to Dr. Gary Willers for his care of Norman and also to the entire staff of AlzCare of DeWitt County for their devoted attention.
Visitation will be Friday, February 8, 2019 from 5-7 pm at Freund Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 9, 2019, 10 am, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Westhoff with Pastor William Hill officiating. Interment will follow at Westhoff Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Westhoff, The Westhoff American Legion, or a favorite charity. Though Norman will be terribly missed by his family and many friends here on earth, it is great solace to know that he is likely enjoying his dominoes and blackjack and will be cheering on the Astros and Cowboys in the great hereafter.
