Life Story for Paul Jackson The Legacy of Paul Calvin Jackson February 27, 1924 – September 15, 2018 On Saturday, September 15, 2018, at 5:30 a.m., Paul Calvin Jackson went home to be with the Lord at the remarkable age of 94. He transitioned from this life to eternal glory with a few of his close family members praying by his bedside at Evergreen Commons Nursing Home in East Greenbush, New York. Months, weeks, and days prior to his peaceful transition, he made it known to everyone that came in contact with him that he wanted to, and was ready to go to his real Home, Heaven.
Affectionately known to many as “Grandpa Jackson”, he was born on February 27, 1924 in Columbus, Ohio, to Juanita Inez Fairfax and George Andrew (Buster) Jackson. He attended Central High School, and Aenon Bible School in Columbus, Ohio. In 1945, he was joined in Holy Matrimony to his first wife, Juanita Mae Middleton and resided in Columbus, Ohio where 5 of 6 children were born to that union.
The family then moved to several parts of Virginia, where the last of his 6 children was born, and then to Boston, Massachusetts, before moving to the Capital District, finally settling down in Troy, New York. Grandpa Jackson possessed a charismatic personality that had a magnetic appeal to youth wherever he went. This was especially evident during his time in the Capital District where he attracted many youth with his toy inventions and original games.
They were entertained for hours. He often distributed prizes to the winners, always with the purpose of him having a captive audience to share the gospel. Elder Jackson later remarried Julia Faye Robertson.
This union lasted nearly 30 years until she went home to be with the Lord in November 2016. Throughout the years he was known as a poet, a song writer, and a self-proclaimed singer. He would also often use his prized cassette tape recorders to record himself singing songs that he had written and classic hymns.
He became what you could call “The Jackson Trio” and sometimes “The Jackson Quartet” by doing voice overs of himself singing alto, tenor, bass, etc. Mind you, this was way before technology allowed you to do this. During his lifetime, Elder Jackson, as he was known in the ministerial circles, became a licensed minister with the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc., headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He spent a number of years holding revivals on the evangelistic field, and even Pastoring. In the early seventies, he contributed to the founding of Redemption Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith, as his son-in-law, Pastor John, Massey, Jr. and his daughter, Joan, received foundational bible teaching under his tutorship. In 2014, due to declining health and extenuating circumstances, Grandpa Jackson became a resident of The Albany County Nursing Home.
It was during his residence there that he fell and broke his hip. Long story short, in 2017, after his hospital stay, he became a resident of Evergreen Commons Nursing Home in East Greenbush, New York. It was there that he became known as a nursing home evangelist, singing, reciting his poetry, praying, and telling everyone he came in contact with about the gospel of Jesus Christ.
From the time he was in the Albany County Nursing Home, until the Saturday before he transitioned to heaven in Evergreen Commons, the Angels of Faith were a bright spot that he eagerly looked forward to every week. He would literally light up when they walked in the room every Saturday. They learned some of his favorite songs and memorized his most famous poem “He Taught Me How To Pray”.
He wanted to hear it every single week. Everyone that was around him for any length of time could often hear him pray in what he called “his prayer language”. His favorite question that he would ask anyone when they would visit him, including his kids, grandkids and caregivers was “Do you have the Holy Ghost?
”, which became his signature quote. Grandpa Jackson is predeceased by his first wife, Juanita and his second wife, Julia, daughter, Barbara Jean Coles, son-in-law, Arthur Billingsley; siblings, Charles, Edward, Earl and Helen. He is survived by his only remaining sibling, Esther Haynes; his daughters Juanita Irene Billingsley; Joan Estelle Massey (John); Paulette Ladonna Camp (David); Patricia Ann Carraway (John); and son, Azzaam Hameed (Stephanie); 27 grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren, and other relatives.
The family will be receiving guests after the burial at the Redemption Church of Christ Pathfinder Youth Center adjacent to the church.
