Paul E Chink Guertin , September 15, 1951 — June 23, 2018

St. Albans – Paul E. “Chink” Guertin a lifelong resident of this area passed away, Saturday evening, June 23, 2018, at the St. Albans Healthcare & Rehab with his family at his side. Born in St. Albans on June 2, 1929, he was the son of the late Leo and Eugenie (Hatin) Guertin. Chink was 89 years old.

On September 15, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York, he married Norma Holbrook, who survives him. Chink was a 1947 graduate of Bellows Free Academy and went on to attend Seton… Read More » Hall University where he played baseball. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951 and served in the Korean War.

During his enlistment he was instrumental in forming a baseball team in Japan and went on to play on the U.S. All-Star team in Japan. He received his honorable discharge in 1953 and then served in the Vermont Army National Guard for 18 years retiring with the rank of Captain. Chink was employed for several years as a bookkeeper at the former Central Vermont Railroad and then at Blodgett Oven Company in Burlington.

Following his retirement, he worked at Grand Union in St. Albans and then in Swanton. He was an avid baseball fan, having played for the Northern League here in Vermont. He attended a training camp at Fenway Park and caught behind Ted Williams and Hank Aaron.

He gave back to Franklin County by coaching many teams in Little League, Babe Ruth and the American Legion Ball teams. He brought Swanton High School to a State Championship and was a well-known umpire from little league to college teams. Chink was a die-hard Yankee’s fan, and an avid golfer, belonging to the Champlain Country Club, a member of Green Mountain Post # 1, American Legion and member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Norma, of St. Albans; their sons, Dale Guertin and his wife, Mary, of Richford and Jay Guertin and his wife, Kathy, of Laconia, New Hampshire, 2 grandchildren, Nicholas Guertin of Manchester, New Hampshire and Erin Caruso, her husband, Joe, and their 2 children, Lillian and Harrison all of Hollis, New Hampshire. He is also survived by a special nephew, Steven Guertin and his wife, Lisa, of Pennsylvania. It was Chink’s wish that services be private and interment be in the Riverside Cemetery in Swanton.
