Rachael’s Obituary Born December 1, 1918 in Atkinson County, Georgia, to Rev. David Matthew Douglas and Mary Elizabeth Douglas, Rachael was the youngest girl of their nine children. She had recently celebrated her 100th birthday party with many friends and family.

She went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, March 9, 2019. Rachael devoted her life to her family and to others, training as a nurse, receiving her RN from Georgia Baptist School of Nursing and her certification in public health from Peabody College in Nashville. She began her career as a public health nurse in 1940 in Clinch County.

She later served in Woodbine. When her boys were older, she moved the family to Rome, Georgia where she served as the school nurse at Darlington School for many years. She returned to public health when she relocated to Fernandina Beach where she served until she retired from the Florida Department of Public Health.

She moved to Waycross in the late seventies where she shared her skills in caregiving and excellent baking with ‘the girls’, sisters Ruth and Loyce. She was a member of Central Baptist Church and very active in the Merry Makers until physical limitations made it difficult to travel much. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters Ruth Douglas, Era (Dan)Middleton, Loyce Douglas, Lillian (Thomas) Burke, brothers David Rowan (Zada) Douglas, Marshall Rewis Douglas, James Marvin Douglas, Jennings Broughton (Betsy) Douglas and son, Marshal Lewis Whiddon.

She is survived by her son Douglas Whiddon, a granddaughter Cally Whiddon, and a number of special nieces and nephews. There will be a visitation at Miles-Odum Funeral from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2019 to be followed by a graveside service at Royal Cemetery in Atkinson County at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Satilla, 808 Evergreen Way, Waycross, GA, 31501.
