Obituary for Richard “Dick” James Smith A kind and gentle soul has departed on November 12, 2018 in Owensboro, KY. Richard “Dick” James Smith, 68, resided in San Antonio Tlayacapan Chapela Jalisco Mexico, for the last several years, where age did not matter, and the tequila ran freely. Born July 15, 1950 in Evansville to James C. Smith and Francis (Corne) Smith, moved to Owensville IN in 1964.

He graduated Owensville High School in 1968. He was also a graduate of Agriculture from Murray State University in Murray, KY. After several years he joined UA Local 136 Plumbers and Steamfitters, he retired in 2012.

He then started researching to retire in Mexico and made it permanent in 2015. Dick will be remembered as a genuine, easy going, laid back, and true mans man. He married the love of his life December of 1994, Dawn.

From the time he arrived at Lakeside, Dick could be found at every concert the Academia Kids ever participated in. He would talk with kids afterwards, allow them to play his precious custom Kincaid ukes, give congratulations and encouragement to teachers and students alike. He was a friend to all, and music was his avocation.

He especially loved jazz, blues, and classical standard ballads. He is preceded in death by his parents; uncle Joe Corne; and infant brother. Dick is survived by his wife Dawn (Barclay) Smith of Mexico; children Alex Riggs, Katie Jo Smith, Matthew Riggs, Neil Smith, Kyle (Ashley) Smith, and Zach (Jackie Sue) Smith; 10 grandchildren; sister Janet Smith; aunt Sissy Corne Coleman; cousins, who made his childhood interesting,; father-in-law; step-mother-in-law; sister-in-law; and brothers-in-law who appreciated the easy conversations.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Ukulele kids, where there is a Richard Smith Memorial Fund. Donations in US dollars can be made through PayPal at Sfruof@gmail.com, using the friends and family option so no fees are deducted. Holder’s Funeral Home is honored and privileged to be entrusted with the care of Mr. Smith.

Visitation will be held Sunday November 18, 2018 at Holders Funeral Home from 1p-5p with memorial service at 4pm and Bob Douglas will officiate.
