Richard Henry Smith, 87, of Elk Rapids, formerly of Manton, found eternal peace on Wednesday, February 6, 2019. Richard was born on February 18, 1931 to the late Clinton and Goldie (Duer) Smith of Manton. Richard honorably served his country from 1951-1953 in the United States Army, actively serving in the Korean War.

He was a life member of the AMVETS, and a loyal member to the VFW Post and Veteran of Foreign Wars. Richard was a quiet, conservative man that had an unwavering love for his family. He greatly enjoyed the beauty of the woods, finding solace in hunting deer, rabbit and the splitting of wood.

Richard is survived and missed dearly by his daughter Debra (Christopher) Peterson, his son Rick (Roxann Kitchen-Smith) Smith, his grandchildren; Scott, Bryon, Benjamin and Kadin, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Charlynn Kay Clapp (Jan. 2, 2005) his parents, and his siblings; Forest, Cleo, Theodore, Wilma, Gyneth, Aubrey and Oscar.

A funeral service to honor Richard’s life will take place Saturday February 16, 2019 at 11:00am at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior. Full military honors will be presented at the service. Those wishing to offer an expression of sympathy may do so to the Cowell Cancer Treatment Center of Traverse City or to the NRA in Richard’s honor.
