Robert “Bob” C.’s Obituary Robert “Bob” C. Selig, Sr, 93, of Pocono Lake, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, March 16th, 2019. He was the husband of the late Marian (Miller) Selig with whom he shared over 70 years of marriage at the time of her death on February 13, 2017. Born in Scranton, Robert was a son of the late Carl H. Jr. and Elsie (Moncrief) Selig.

He honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II; and was a 73-year member of the American Legion Post 413, Pocono Lake, and was instrumental in the Post obtaining its original liquor license. He was also a charter member of the Tobyhanna Township Volunteer Ambulance Corps and a life member of the Tobyhanna Township Volunteer Fire Company. Robert became a local celebrity when he appeared in a Prince Albert tobacco advertisement in the magazine Successful Farming in the 1950’s.

His employment history included positions with Wagner’s Tree Farm, Greco’s Drug Store, Mikel’s Motors dealership, and Pocono Lake Preserve where he served as Assistant Manager. Robert also had a few years tenure as Deputy Sheriff of Monroe County. Following his 20+ years at Pocono Lake Preserve he became Vice President of Selig Construction Company working with his son, Robert Selig, Jr. until retiring in 2000.

During the 1970’s and 1980’s, Robert was active as a Modern Western Style Square Dance Caller for the Bucks and Does which danced at Buck Hill Inn and the Sam Strutters which danced at Pocono Manor. He often appeared at various Pocono resorts with several club members to entertain tourists by demonstrating Modern Western Square Dancing. Robert, Bob, as his friends affectionately called him, loved playing horseshoes – he competed at local tournaments during the summer months.

In his younger years, he enjoyed playing tennis at Pocono Lake Preserve and loved watching tennis on TV into his 90’s. He is survived by a son, Robert Jr. and wife Mabel of Pocono Lake; daughters Nancy Turha and husband Thomas of Bethlehem, Mary Ellen Bankus and husband Robert of Pocono Lake, Linda Snyder and husband Jeffrey of Stroudsburg, Janet Sutliff of Pocono Lake, Laura Deane and husband Sean of Pocono Lake, and Loretta Daubert and her partner Brenda Fiorani of Freeland; a sister, Emma Jones of Pittston; 14 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Robert was preceded in death by his brother Carl H. Selig III.

Services will be held on Saturday, March 23, at Salem United Church of Christ, 108 Church Road (Old Route 940), Pocono Pines; with a calling hour beginning at 10:00 am followed by Robert’s celebration of life service at 11:00am. Burial will immediately follow at Pocono Lake Cemetery, Old Route 940, Pocono Pines. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Robert’s memory to the American Legion Wilson-Fischer Post 413, 248 Old Route 940, Pocono Lake, PA 18347.
