Robert Clayton Pope, 72, of Mandan, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2018 into eternal life after a lengthy illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 4, 2019 at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, ND. Burial will be at held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 3, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Spirit of Life Church with a Rosary/Parish Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday. Bob was born on May 13, 1946 to Thomas and Eva (Gress) Pope in Mandan, ND. He joined the U.S. Navy on May 7, 1969 and was honorably discharged on May 6, 1973.

He served on the ship USS Benjamin Stoddert. He worked in various positions that included the City of Mandan, Morton County, and Spirit of Life Church. Bob was a kind, gentle, humble, and soft spoken man with a deep faith who loved the Lord, his family, and church.

He enjoyed long walks on the prairie with his dog Bella, yoga, and cross country skiing in the winter. Bob always had a project – he worked on his home and machinery and would always lend a helping hand to others. Often you’d find him listening to music, especially the Christian stations and talk radio.

When gardening he would preserve his own fruit and vegetables and would grow flowers and wild flowers which he loved. Always a generous man, he would give away his produce from his garden and the eggs from the chickens and ducks he raised. He also raised a beautiful peacock.

Bob was an active member at Spirit of Life Church in the choir, the soup kitchen and as a custodian. He was an artistic man who was greatly loved and respected, and will be dearly missed. Bob is survived by his four sisters, Sharon Zander of Mandan, Anita Baillie of Bismarck, Laura Pope and her husband, Larry Anderson of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Laine Pope of Mandan; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his dog, Bella.

He is preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Go to Bob’s tribute wall to sign the online guestbook, share memories, and view tribute photos and video.
