Obituary for Robert Kirby Jr. Robert Harrison Kirby, Jr. Born September 22, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland Died October 15, 2018 in Roanoke, Virginia Son of the late Robert Harrison Kirby, Sr. and Mary Ruth Logue of Seaford, Delaware. Survived by Wife, Elizabeth Dyer, whom he married in September 1968 at the World War II Memorial Chapel at Virginia Tech. Sister, Elaine Messick, of Delmar, Maryland, and Brother, Richard Kirby & wife Donna, of Ocean Pines, MD.
Son, Robert Harrison Kirby, III and Daughter-in-Law, Melissa. Son, James Dyer Kirby, and Daughter-in-Law, Clara. Grandson’s – Ryan and Fiancée, Cassie, Brandon, Jason, Riley, and Edgar.
Moved to Seaford, Delaware, and was a member of the St. John’s United Methodist Church as a child. As a youth he was part of Cub Scout Pack 249 and Boy Scout Troop 249 where he earned Arrow of Light, God and Country Award and achieved the Rank of Life Scout. Attended Camp Rodney and Henson as a scout and camp counselor.
Graduated Seaford Senior High School in 1964, where he ran on the Cross-Country Team and was a part of the Drama Department Scenery Committee. Attended Virginia Tech, majoring in Mechanical Engineering, graduating with the Class 1968. While at Tech he married the love of his life Elizabeth Dyer from Roanoke, Virginia.
As a Hokie, he was a member of ROTC Squadron before entering the United States Air Force. Served 4 years at RADC in Rome, New York leaving at the rank of Sergeant. Active member of Mt.
Zion United Methodist Church in Finksburg, Maryland since 1975. Volunteered on the Finance Committee since 1984 and was actively involved in the church council. He was a previous Sunday School teacher and “Buckwheat Pancake Chef” until 2016.
Active scouter since 1981 in Baltimore Area Council Boy Scouts of America, Carroll District with his 2 sons. Served as Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 395, Troop 395 Assistant Scoutmaster, Troop Committee Member, Troop 1750 Charter Organization Representative, and Carroll District Training Team. Earned the Carroll District Scouter of the Year in 1995.
He enjoyed spending time with his sons and grandsons in their Boy Scout endeavors and enthusiastically cheered on their sporting interests. He was an avid NASCAR fan, rooting on the Petty team drivers. A visitation will be held 0n Thursday, October 18, 2018 from 2:00pm-4:00pm & 6:00pm-8:00pm at Eline Funeral Home – 2901 Bloom Road, Finksburg, MD.
A Graveside service will be held on Friday, October 19, 2018 at 11:00am at Deer Park UMC – 2200 Sykesville Road, Westminster, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to: Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Attn: Building Fund 3006 Old Westminster Pike, Finksburg, MD 21048 or Wesley United Methodist Church Attn: Boy Scout Troop 380 “Outing Fund” 3239 Carrollton Rd, Hampstead, MD 21074 where all his grandson’s attended.
