Robert W. Gagnon June 04, 1945 – February 11, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Northfield, VT Robert W. Gagnon, 73 of Northfield, died on Monday, February 11, 2019 at the UVM Medical Center in Burlington, VT. He was born on June 4, 1945, in Fall River, MA, the son of Robert C. and Louise (Wrightington) Gagnon. He graduated from Monsignor Prevost High School in Fall River and then attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Latin American History in 1967.

He earned his Juris Doctorate from Washington University Law School in St. Louis, Mo. , in 1970. In 1967, he married his beloved wife, Joan Vezina, in Westport, MA.

Upon moving to Vermont in 1970, Bob served as Washington County Deputy State’s Attorney, and then was later elected as Washington County State’s Attorney where he served from 1972 until 1976. He later went to work for the Vermont Attorney General’s Office as Chief of the Criminal Justice Division, and then later in the Civil Division until he retired in 2004. From 1982 until recently he also worked as a professor at Vermont Law School where he taught Evidence and Trial Practice.

He was a member of the Vermont Bar Association Bob had a wide variety of interests including duck hunting, sailing and canoeing, and collecting stamps, books and antique tools. He enjoyed woodworking and after attending the Wooden Boat School in Maine crafted his own pulling boat. He enjoyed sailing on Lake Groton and Lake Champlain.

Bob was also an avid fly fisherman and for many years fished and camped with his friends at the Big Eddy campground in Baxter State Park in Maine. He also enjoyed golfing every summer with his friends. In addition, he and Joan spent many years motorcycling throughout New England and the Canadian Maritimes.

He was a lifelong fan of the Red Sox. He also enjoyed spending summers with his family at their camp on Lake Groton. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, his daughter Caitlin, his son Ross and his wife, Jennifer, and granddaughter Olivia, a brother, two sisters, and nieces and a nephew.

He also leaves his close friends, Stephen and Cynthia Murphy and their family. A family memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Food Bank, 33 Parker Road, Barre, VT 05641.
