Romeo Adelard Garand, 90, of St. Mary Street in St. Johnsbury, Vt. passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Greensboro Nursing Home in Greensboro, Vt. Romeo was born on November 5, 1928 in St. Johnsbury to Sam and Mary (Duperron) Garand.

He grew up in St. Johnsbury and began working at Fairbanks Scales at the age of 16. He served in the Army from 1951-1952 and then returned to Fairbanks Scales. He worked at Fairbanks for 45 years until his retirement in 1991.

Romeo married Marjorie Cass and shared his life with her on St. Mary Street until her death in 1973. Romeo enjoyed hunting and fishing and taking rides around the area. He loved dogs and had many throughout the years.

He liked cooking spaghetti with meatballs and pork pies. In his younger days and again while in Greensboro, Romeo enjoyed drawing. For many years, he and his long time companion, Polly, would regularly meet and chat with their friends at McDonalds.

Romeo was a member of St. John Catholic Church. Survivors include two sons: Michael Garand and companion, Reda Westover, of Sheffield, Vt, and David Garand and companion, Karen Madison, of St. Johnsbury; six grandchildren: April Sholan and husband, Bobby, Tyler Garand, Jessica Daigle, Michael and Mathias Madison, and Emily Lussier; ten great-grandchildren: Lilli, Autumn, and Gunnar Sholan, Ethan and Jaykob Lussier, Harper and Kennly Daigle, and Jade, Immogen, and Luke Cotey; and a nephew: Phillip Garand. Romeo was predeceased by his wife: Marjorie Garand; brothers: Donald and Raymond Garand; granddaughter: Jamie Garand; great-granddaughter: Payton Lussier; and his companion of many years: Pauline Hawkins.

A Mass of Christian Burial officiated by Fr. Curtis Miller will take place on Friday, January 4, 2019, 11AM, at St. John Church on Winter Street in St. Johnsbury, VT. At Romeo’s request there will be no calling hours.

Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at 10am. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.
