Sabra Whatcott Walker June 13, 1924 ~ May 29, 2019 Sabra Whatcott Walker passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at her home in Roy, Utah. Sabra was born in Plymouth, Utah on June 13, 1924 to Clemouth Lavell Whatcott and Vesta Admeta Pulley Whatcott, and was the second of seven children. When she was four years old, her family moved to Logan, Utah where her father taught school.
Sabra attended school at Whittier Elementary Training School (a training school for Utah State Agricultural College—which later became Utah State University), Logan Junior High School (where she got to take some art classes from her father who taught there), and graduated from Logan High School in 1942, just after World War II had started. Sabra attended college at Utah State Agricultural College for three years, majoring in English and languages. She took a break to serve a mission for the LDS church in the Spanish American mission, serving in Carlsbad, New Mexico, San Antonio, Texas, and Denver Colorado.
She learned to speak Spanish, which was a benefit to her throughout her life. After this mission, Sabra returned home and finished her last year of college, graduating with a teaching degree, which she used when she accepted an offer to teach English at Shelley High School in Shelley, Idaho. She was also able to teach some Latin and speech classes.
She, herself, was a very entertaining and interesting speaker. Sabra has always loved to attend the temple (any temple) and it was very fitting that she met her future husband, Vernon John Walker, in the Idaho Falls Temple. They were married in the Logan, Utah Temple on July 28, 1953.
To this eternal union, ten children were born: Kathleen, Shannon, Camille, Brian Vernon, Candice, April, Julie, Sheldon Bryce, Jared Wendell, and Rulon Nathaniel. Their posterity has grown to include 34 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Sabra and Vernon lived in Pocatello, Idaho for 43 years before moving to Roy, Utah (which was much closer to the temple in Ogden).
She and Vernon served three missions together for Tthe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: New Zealand (temple) mission; Philippines, San Fernando (office) mission; and a mission to Ruskin, Florida (Church Farms), teaching English as a second language to the Spanish-speaking workers there (this is where the Spanish she learned on her first mission really came in handy). Before, after, and between these missions, they served in the Ogden Temple. They were also able to “see the world” on their missions and on their way home from their missions, visiting Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, the Philippines, and on another occasion, the Holy Lands.
Sabra was a master teacher and held many teaching positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as well as serving as the Relief Society President. We will miss her witty conversation and caring ways. We love you, Mom!
Sabra is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Vernon, a daughter, Camille, and three siblings. She is survived by nine of her children: Kathleen Kimber (Steven), Hooper, UT; Shannon Walker, Roy, UT; Brian Walker (Amy), North Ogden, UT; Candice Farnes (David), Moscow, ID; April Solomon (Kevin), Pocatello, ID; Julie Bashford, Roy, UT; Sheldon Walker (Cindy), Hooper, UT; Jared Walker (Aimee), Roy, UT; Rulon Walker (Keva), Roy, UT; 34 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 3, 2019 at the Westlake Ward Chapel, 2915 West 4425 South, Roy.
The family will meet with friends on Monday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
