Mr. Allen was born June 20, 1916, in Lancaster, SC, the son of Dr. Samuel Lanham Allen and Florence Williams Allen. He was a graduate of The University of the South, Sewanee, TN, and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.

In 1939 he joined the Navy as an Aviator Cadet and served as a Naval Aviator during World War II and attained the rank of Lt. Commander. Mr. Allen was former General Manager of New York Life Insurance in Charleston where he was a member of St. Phillips Episcopal Church.

He belonged to the Carolina Yacht Club, Yeamans Hall Club, Kiwanis Club, The Society of Colonial Wars, The Country Club of Charleston, Life Underwriters Association, General Agents and Managers Association, and the Sales and Marketing Executive Association. Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Colmery Allen. He is survived by two sons, Samuel Lanham Allen III (Nancy) of Woodstock, GA, Dr. Scott Hagood Allen (Julie) of Florence, SC, a daughter, Martha Allen Duncan of Columbia, SC, ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to York Place/Thompson Child & Family Focus, ATTN: Fund Development, 6800 Saint Peters Lane, Matthews, NC 28105; or to Kanuga, PO Box 250, Hendersonville, NC 28793. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 15, 2019, at the Florence National Cemetery.
