NORTH KINGSVILLE — Samuel Patrick Albert Orlando (90), formerly of North Kingsville, died peacefully Monday, January 14, 2019 at St. Mary of the Woods in Avon. He is reunited with his beloved wife Amelia (Nigri) who died March 26, 2015. Sam is the cherished father of Richard (Cindy), Ave, Anthony (Maria), Nick (Laurie), Roselle (Ted Popiel) and Francesca (Terry) Lehman.

He is the adored grandfather “Papa” of Kristen (Mike) Ricordati, Katie (Jonathan) Schultz, Michael, Stephen, Giovanna (Igor Mierzvinski), Nicholas (Emily), Ave (Brendan) Fields, Marco; Elise, Daniel and Joseph Lehman; great-grandfather of Rosie and Lucia Orlando, Samantha Ricordati, Emilia Fields, and Molly Schultz; dearest brother of Ronald (Sandra), Joseph (Jeanette) and Terry (Kathy) and precious uncle, cousin, and friend to many. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Rose (St. Angelo) Orlando, and his siblings Leo, Anthony, Robert (Shirley) Orlando, and Norma (Mike) Laurello. Sam was an active member at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church as an RCIA mentor, eucharistic minister, and church festival volunteer.

Sam and Amelia visited many Catholic shrines during their married life. They traveled to Italy to support the needs of immigrants and refugees. During that trip, they had a private audience with Pope John 23rd.

Sam’s work on immigration led to his meeting of four presidents (Eisenhower, Nixon, Johnson, Kennedy). One of his fondest memories from the age of eleven was traveling to the World’s Fair and meeting Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, and Lou Gehrig. Sam was a member of the Ohio Grocers Association, and a charter member of the National Grocers Association.

He was the proprietor of Orlando’s Golden Dawn located in North Kingsville, Ohio. A private service and mass were recently held in Ashtabula at Our Lady of Peace. Donations can be made in Sam’s memory at st.
