Obituary for Sandra Mayeux Johnson Sandra Mayeux Johnson, 76, of Carencro, Louisiana, formerly a resident of lower Plaquemines Parish, died peacefully at 5 p.m., Nov. 27 at her home in Carencro, surrounded by loved ones. Born Nov.

7, 1942, in Lafayette, she is predeceased by her parents, Lance and Lois (Cailleteau) Mayeux of Lafayette and survived by her husband of 55 years, Larry Johnson of Empire. Born and raised in Lafayette, Sandra was a 1960 graduate from Mount Carmel High School and went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Southwestern University. She later earned a degree in Elementary Education from Our Lady of Holy Cross College in New Orleans.

She married in 1963 and moved to South Plaquemines Parish in 1969. Shortly thereafter, Hurricane Camille struck the area and teachers were desperately needed. Sandra was recruited to serve her community — thus beginning a 32-year career as a primary school teacher with the Plaquemines Parish School System.

Teaching children to read was her true calling. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina drove Sandra and Larry from their beloved home in Nairn. They relocated to Carencro where they lived for the past 13 years.

Sandra’s passion was her family. She was a completely devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed taking care of her husband, home, children and grandchildren.

She loved Destin, Florida, anything New Orleans, holiday cooking, wearing red lipstick, beignets and coffee from Café Du Monde. A popular pastime was crossing the street to visit Pam Prest and arguing with Tako Johnny. She loved her Mount Carmel girls, the pigeon club ladies, writing to the Carmelite Nuns and spending time with family and friends.

She will always be remembered for her witty, outgoing personality and beautiful smile. Survivors include her three children, daughter Cherie Johnson Hebert and husband Jimmy of Lafayette, daughter Jill Johnson Vallot and husband Chris and son, John Carroll (Johnny) Johnson and wife Tiffany of Belle Chasse; grandson, Jacob Gauthier and granddaughter Jamie Hebert of Atlanta; grandson Reese Johnson and granddaughter Abigail Johnson of Belle Chasse and granddaughter Maci Moreau of Carencro; and great-grandchildren, John Gray Gauthier and Vivienne Gauthier of Atlanta; and two brothers, Daniel Mayeux and wife Sheryl, and David Mayeux, both of Lafayette; and a sister-in-law, Myrna Buras, her husband Bob of Covington. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Ronald Mayeux.

After suffering from a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer, Sandra is at peace. The family would like to thank Idilsa (Bibi) Rodriquez Galan, her dedicated caregiver, as well the doctors at M.D. Anderson, nurse practitioner Allison Bertand, Dr. Michael Cain, the compassionate staff at the Cancer Center of Acadiana and Hospice of Acadiana, in particular, Charlotte Aall-Jolet, Sandra’s wonderful hospice nurse. Visitation will be held for Sandra from 3 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Dec.

1 at Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Dr., Lafayette. A rosary led by Father Hampton Davis will be said at 5:30 p.m., directly followed by a eulogy service. Music will be by Pastor Ty Cook.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted on Dec. 3, at noon at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 8968 LA-23 in Belle Chasse with visitation preceding Mass, beginning at 9 a.m. at the church. Father Kyle Dave will officiate.
