Obituary for Sione Kaisa Lui Sione Kaisa Lui, 71, passed away on September 8, 2018, in Provo, Utah surrounded by his family and close friends. He was born December 26, 1946, in Fua’amotu, Tonga to Sione Ha’ati and Mele Piei Kaisa Lui. He married Charlene Bonnie Vincent Lui on May 19, 1973 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Kaisa was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He left Tonga to come to the United States to further his education. He attended Church College of Hawaii and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
It was at BYU where he met his eternal companion Charlene. He graduated with his Associates Degree. For 28 years Kaisa worked at Geneva Steel until the plant closed.
In addition, he also owned and operated Lui Landscaping Inc. Kaisa was proud to be Tongan and was very involved with community work. Kaisa was one of the founders of NTAS (National Tongan American Society) and served as the president. Because of his work with NTAS, he received the chiefly title of Ma’u Tofi’a.
Kaisa was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he served in several positions: counselor in the branch presidency, Sunday School counselor, home teacher and youth leader. Kaisa loved playing Rugby and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play the game as well. He was one of the original founders of the Provo Steelers Rugby Club.
He also played on the BYU Rugby team. And, he was also known for his award-winning boxing skills. Kaisa is survived by his wife, Charlene Lui.
Children, Jennifer Keikilani Shah (Sharrieff), Judd Vincent Kaleo (Jennifer), Jenohn Makalehua, (Eric Phillips), Jessica Meleane Nelson (Matthew), Jerrit Kaisa Kealii and Jacob Haati Lui. Ten grandchildren: Sharrieff, Omar, Mikayla, Micah, Mason, Jaxson, Liyah, Laila, Asher and Sesi. He is also survived by his brothers: Lihai, Mahalo, Sione Lui, and one sister, Meleane Niualiku.
Services are under the direction Peni Malohifo’ou of Serenity Funeral Home The family invites all to attend the following services: Nofo Aki Putu on September 12 and 13 at 766 North 900 West in Orem, Utah (Lui home); Apo (viewing) September 14 from 7:00-10:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 825 East 500 North, American Fork, Utah; September 15 viewing is from 8:00-10:00 a.m., funeral service is from 11:00 a.m. to noon at 825 East 500 North. The burial will follow immediately after the funeral services at 1:00 p.m. at the Orem City Cemetery, 1520 North 800 East. The family would like to thank the Alpha Home Health staff for their kindness in taking care of Kaisa.
We would also like to thank the hospice medical staff at UVRMC for their support during Kaisa’s final stages of life. Until we meet again, nunui ke aloha no and ‘ofa lahi atu . .
