II Corinthians 5:8 reveals the truth that to be absent from the body is to be in the presence of the Lord. That amazing promise became a reality for Spencer Lazenby Luckie as she peacefully left this earthly life behind and claimed her new life in God’s presence on Wednesday, May 15, 2019. Just as she would have wanted it, her devoted family was by her side.

She was born April 15, 1941 in Newnan to the late Edward “Bo” and Frances Spradlin Lazenby. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James Vache Luckie. Spencer graduated from Newnan High School where she was active in the band program and had the distinction to be the first person to play bassoon in the concert band.

She was also a majorette in the marching band back in the day when the majorettes twirled fire batons at the football games. She later attended West Georgia College. For many years, Spencer was the administrative assistant to the superintendent of The Coweta County Schools and served as secretary of that board.

Spencer’s greatest joy and satisfaction in life, was in the roles of wife, daughter, mother, grandmother and sister. Vying for attention, always, were her dog children, Jellybean and Otis Luckie. Building on her background as an accomplished musician she was a gifted pianist and for many years was the organist at her beloved Providence Baptist Church.

Spencer is survived by her son, James William (Billy) Luckie; daughter, Melanie Luckie Youngblood (Paul Willis). She loved being a doting grandmother to Ashley (Lee) Sewell, Dillon (Rachel) Youngblood, and Dalton Youngblood. Her great grandchildren are Izabella Sewell and Everleigh Youngblood.

Also surviving are her sister, Elaine Landers, nieces, cousins, and many lifelong friends. Funeral arrangements are being handled by McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan. Visitation will be Monday, May 20th, from 6 to 8 pm.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 21st, at 2 pm in the Chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with the Reverend Ken Norton officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
