Visitation Thursday, October 25, 2018 Friday, October 26, 2018 3-7 PM at St. Mary Center Funeral Mass Saturday, October 27, 2018 10 AM at St. Mary Center Chapel Sister Mary Agnes (Rosemary) Cobry, a Sister of St. Mary of Namur for 79 years, died October 21, 2018 at St. Mary Center, next to the school which she attended for twelve years and across the street from Annunciation were she was baptized shortly after her birth in 1921. Sister Mary Agnes was the daughter of the late Christopher H. Cobry and Mary Agnes (Loughren) Cobry; sister of the late Florence Cobry, John J. (Josephine) Cobry, Grace B. (Chester) Krantz, and Donald R. Cobry. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Cathleen A. Commaroto, Christine A. Cobry, Amy Dow, Breanne Montgomery, James Krantz, Tom Krantz [deceased], Corey J. Commaroto, Daniel M. Commaroto, Jeffrey Krantz, Timothy Krantz, and Michael Krantz; and her sisters in the community of the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur.
She entered St. Mary in 1939 and began a teaching career in Buffalo (St. Mary Seminary, Holy Spirit, Our Lady of Lourdes), Kenmore (St. Andrew School, St. John School), Lowell, Massachusetts (Sacred Heart School), Binghamton (St. Mary School), Lockport (St. Patrick School) and Sumter, South Carolina (St. Jude School). She also served as principal for some years. Sr. Mary Agnes had a B.S. from Rosary Hill College and studied at Niagara University, Canisius College, Catholic University, and Newton College in Massachusetts.
After Sister finished her work in teaching, she began another ministry, visiting patients in Lockport Hospital, Mount View, Oddfellow and Rebekah Home, Briody Nursing Home, United Church Colony, Newfane Health and Presbyterian Home. She had previously worked with the sick and home bound in St. Ann Parish, Florence, South Carolina. Even when she was not able to do as much as she had formerly and was living at Queen of Heaven Convent in West Seneca, Sister managed to visit Maplewood Nursing Home, Garden Gate Nursing Home, and Seneca Manor Nursing.
Sometimes it was not necessary to make communion calls because a mass was available, but Sister’s ready smile and charming sense of humor lit up the rooms of the elderly. Her lovely voice sometimes entertained with funny ballads like “The Martins and the Coys”. She brought laughter to many and did so almost to the very end.
The wake will be Thursday 3-7 pm and Friday 3-7 pm with a wake service on Friday at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 am. Both the wake and funeral will be held at St. Mary Center, 241 Lafayette Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14213.
Burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda, immediately following the funeral. If desired, memorials to the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur Memorial Fund are preferred.
