Obituary for Stephen N. Kiel Mr. Stephen (Steve) N. Kiel of Seymour, IN passed away peacefully on his 75th birthday at Lutheran Community Home. He was born in Indianapolis to the late Norman Kiel and Mildred (VonStrohe) Farrow. Steve was a lifelong resident of Seymour.

He attended Immanuel Lutheran School through Grade 8 and graduated from Seymour High School in 1962, where he played basketball, football and baseball. He took over the family farm at age 19, foregoing college, and worked as a farmer for over 10 years. Steve worked for a short time at Co-op Lumberyard, and eventually landed a full-time buyer position at the John C. Groub Company in 1973, where he later became the Director of Human Res and retired after a 35-year career.

Active throughout his life in Seymour Jaycees (Jaycee of the Year 1968 & Past President), Boys & Girls Clubs (Board member), and the United Fund (Drive Chairman in 1993), Steve has been a fixture in the Seymour community. He was one of three Jaycee members who presented the original idea in 1972 for the Seymour Octoberfest, to the mayor at the time. He participated in bowling and softball leagues and coached many of his children’s youth sports teams.

An avid sports lover, golfer and athlete, he always enjoyed watching, attending, and talking about sporting events. Steve was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church, confirmed and married at Redeemer Lutheran Church. At the time of his passing, he remained an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he served on numerous boards and committees, and at one time served as President of the congregation.

He modeled his strong faith throughout his life and positively impacted many people through his actions and words. Steve married his wife of 50 years, Jean (Levagood) Kiel at Redeemer Church in August of 1968. Jean survives, along with daughter Angie (Jo) Hendrix, and son Mike (Teri) Kiel, step-brother Rodney (Charlene) Farrow, and grandchildren Prader (13), Elleigh (10), & Justice (5).

Steve always had a story or joke to tell. He loved keeping up with the latest happenings of the youth in the church and was the self-proclaimed Mayor of Peter’s Switch. He enjoyed playing golf, bush hogging and mowing grass, driving his gator, eating a good Brick burger or Larison’s tenderloin, dancing, traveling, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, Jan 15th from 4 to 8pm at Voss & Sons Funeral Service. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church on Wednesday, January 16th at 2 pm, with light refreshments to follow. A private burial will take place.
