Obituary for Sylvia Rose Sherman It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sylvia Rose Sherman, 77, of Pittsfield, who passed away on Christmas Eve after a courageous three-year battle with dementia. Sylvia was born in Cooperstown, New York, on May 19, 1941, to the late Harriet Kolner Peters and George Kolner. She moved to the Berkshires to attend Saint Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsfield, from which she graduated in 1962.
During that time, she met the love of her life, the late Edward A. Sherman of the Pittsfield Police Department, and they soon began their beautiful life together. They were married on June 20, 1964, in New Lebanon, New York, and raised their family in southeast Pittsfield. “Ed and Syl” traveled the world together in their later years, fulfilling such dreams as scaling the Great Wall of China, sailing on the Queen Mary II and exploring the streets of Rome.
Some travels were more local: friends and strangers alike recognized them cruising around town from their tell-tale “EDSYL” license plate. Sylvia was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a devoted member of the parish, happily contributing her time to the CCD program, the adoration chapel and numerous fundraising efforts. She also enjoyed many years at Pittsfield’s Senior Center and countless lunches with her dear former classmates from St. Luke’s.
Above all, she was most proud of her family and was the happiest woman in the world while with them. Sylvia never missed a single event in her grandchildren’s lives, and she made every summer cookout, Friday-night dinner, or otherwise ordinary day special. She was a vibrant, loving constant in their lives and will be missed forever.
Sylvia leaves two daughters, Christine Sherman-Curtin of Lee and Tracy Sherman of Pittsfield; a son, Edward Sherman of Pittsfield; a sister, Nancy Dragotta of McKinney, Texas; two granddaughters, Sarina Tracy of Cambridge and Carmen Sherman of Pittsfield; a grandson, Christopher Tracy of Pittsfield; and a son-in-law, Carl Lawrence Curtin of Lee. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jordan Tracy, in 1996, and her husband, Edward Sherman, in 2005. Sylvia’s family would like to thank the staff at Mount Carmel Care Center for always treating this special woman like a queen, frequently adorning her beautiful white hair with a tiara, and always embracing her like their own.
