Terry Lee Smith, Sr. January 28, 1943 – January 30, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Terry Lee Smith, Sr. 76, of rural Columbia City, died at his home at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2019. He was born January 28, 1943 in Huntington, Indiana a son of the late Robert M. and Eileen M. (Miller) Smith. His formative years were spent on a farm in Huntington County.

He graduated from Roanoke High School in 1961. On August 31, 1962, he was united in marriage to Alice E. Wiedenhoeft. They lived in both rural Huntington and Whitley Counties before moving in 1971 to Fort Wayne, where they lived until 2001.

Terry was a farmer his entire life. He loved the land and driving his tractor. He also worked for BF Goodrich Tire Plant in Woodburn as a tire builder for 32 years.

Following his retirement, he continued farming and worked for different companies. His favorite “retirement job” was driving a van for Community Transportation Network in Fort Wayne. Throughout his adult life he sponsored church youth groups and was held in high esteem by the youth he served and loved.

He was proud of his four sons and dearly loved his grandchildren, attending many of their activities. He instilled a strong work ethic in his sons and felt he had done his job when they all completed college degrees. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alice; four sons, Terry Lee (Mary) Smith, Jr., David (Joni) Smith, Columbia City, William (Sue) Smith and Timothy (Jama) Smith, both of Fort Wayne; 12 grandchildren and a brother, Richard (Bobby) Smith, Wolcottville.

The funeral service is 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church, 204 N Main St, Columbia City. Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City and 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Preferred memorials are to the Eberhard Lutheran Church or Community Transportation Network.
