Obituary for Thomas Arden Tyler Jr. Thomas Arden Tyler, Jr. – passed away at University of Chicago Hospital, Monday, July 23, 2018 with his loving family, wife, sons, sister-in-law, brother-in-law and niece by his side to comfort him through his journey to the other side. Survived by his wife of and high school sweetheart of 46 years (Jacqueline DiVecchio) Tyler. His two beloved sons, Zachary Thomas Tyler and Jacob Grant Tyler whom he considered the best gifts of his life.
His sister-in-laws, Janet DiVecchio and Judith (James) Ramsay. His niece and nephews, Jamie (Ric Horejs) Ramsay, Jason (Julie) Ramsay and David Frogge. His faithful four-legged dachshunds Loki, Kaiser and Heidi and his cat, Moo-Moo.
Loki will miss his Tom, every night he would patiently wait at the front window for his master to return home, he will miss him dearly. Also survived by one uncle Richard (Dorothy) Tyler and numerous cousins. Preceded in death by his parents Carol V. (Erickson) Tyler (2013) and his father Thomas A. Tyler Sr. (2016).
Maternal grandparents Mary Jane (Williams) and Frederick Erickson. Paternal grandparents Myrtle (Guest) and James Tyler. His adoring four-legged childhood dachshund, Ginger (1968) and his loyal dachshund, Bismarck (1988).
Tom was born in Joliet, IL. October 3, 1950. He was the only child of Tom and Carol (Erickson) Tyler.
He grew up in the small town of Elwood and considered himself blessed to have so many cousins and friends to play with during his childhood, He attended Elwood grade school. His special aunt Mary Jane (Erickson) Burns was his first grade teacher and his Grandmother Mary Jane (Williams) Erickson was his fifth grade teacher. Tom graduated from Joliet East High School(1968).
Tom was brilliant with a passion for education. He earned his first degree at Southern Illinois University (Bachelor of Science in Economics)(1972); his second and third degree from John Marshall Law School (Juris Doctor of Law (1980) and a Masters of Law)(1990). His fourth degree from Colorado State University (Masters of Applied Industrial Organizational Psychology)(2007).
Tom began his career working in Chicago for the Commodity Exchange Commission as an investigator and then an attorney (1974-1984). He then went to work for his father at Merit Employment Assessment Services, Inc. developing promotional exams for police and fire departments. He served as Vice-President, then President of the company from 1984-present.
Tom married his high-school sweetheart (Jacqueline DiVecchio) during his college years (June 11, 1972). He was a wonderful husband and a good friend. Tom was always considerate of others and put their needs first.
Tom went on to have two sons, Zachary (1982) and Jacob (1986). Tom loved his sons, he made sure that he was there for them never missing any event or activity. He was always there for his sons and shared a special bond that will live in their hearts forever.
Tom was a member of the American Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association and Chicago Bar Association. A special thanks to his child-hood friends, Larry (Julie) Coldwater and Tony Contos who visited him in the hospital during his final days. The visits allowed him to share memories for happy times enjoyed in his younger years.
Funeral services will be held at the Carlson Holmquist Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Road, Saturday, July 28, at 10:00 A.M. Memorials to New Lenox Fire Department or Dachshund Rescue would be appreciated. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 27th from 3:00-7:00. Inurnment at a later date.
