Obituary for Thomas Edward Wheeler Sr. Thomas Edward Wheeler, Sr, age 67, of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday morning, December 11, 2018 after a long illness. He was born in Richlands, Virginia, and was the son of the late Herman Leo Wheeler and Daisy Barrett Wheeler. He was a graduate of Richlands High School, Class of 1970 and worked in construction and coal mining as a successful hoist operator for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters; Emilene Vannoy, Peggy Thompson, Penny Long; and brother, John Wheeler. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, and a beloved brother and uncle to many. We was married to the love of his life and best friend, Barbara Jean Vandyke Wheeler for 47 years, and was blessed with three children: Bobbi Leigh Shaw and husband Lawrence Shaw III of Fuquay-Varina , NC; Sarah Eilean Thompson and Akil Thompson of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada; and Thomas Edward Wheeler, Jr of Cedar Bluff, Va.
Two sisters and a one brother remain to celebrate his life; Patsy Wheeler of High Point, NC, Pamela Mullins of High Point, NC, and Andrew “Jack” Wheeler and wife Donna of Pounding Mill, VA. Eight grandchildren live to carry on their grandfather’s spirit; Dawnyel Shaw, Lawrence Shaw IV, Heather “JoyAnna” Shaw, Elijah Shaw, Kaylia Shaw, Meyah Thompson. Lincoln Thompson, and Devin Wheeler.
The funeral service and celebration of the life of Thomas Edward Wheeler, Sr. will be conducted at 2:00pm on Saturday, December 22, 2018, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, VA with Rev. Akil Thompson officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, VA.
Pallbearers will be Devin Wheeler, Lawrence Shaw IV, Nathan Blankenship, Rodney Dowdy, Fred Reedy and Andy Reite. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Dr. Bruce Freedman, Michael VanDyke, Robert Adams, Greg Wheeler, Jimmy Wheeler, Elijah Shaw, and Lincoln Thompson. The family will begin receiving friends and loved ones at 12:30pm on Saturday until the time of service at 2pm.
