Our Angel was called to Heaven this week. On Sunday, June 10, 2018, surrounded by her children and grandchildren, Vera Macias Martinez passed away peacefully in her home. Her family by her side, she left Earth with the soothing knowledge that her beloved husband awaited her for their first dance in Heaven.

Born on July 13, 1928 in Oxnard, CA to Zeferino and Reyes Macias, Vera was the final surviving Macias sibling. She was preceded in death by siblings: Carrie, Jim, Frank, Ben, and David. She was also preceded in death by her son, Tommy Martinez, and husband, Robert Martinez.

Vera is survived by her son Bob & his wife KoCo and her daughter Linda; her grandchildren: Tim, Denise, Stefani & her husband Christopher and Tom & his wife Esmeralda; her great grandchildren: Ekaterina, Brittanny, Mitchell, Karlee, Adison and Roman; and her great-great grandchildren: Isabella and Levi. Vera was very proud of the family she created and loved each of them more than anything. A favorite celebration was the annual Christmas tree decorating night.

Vera prepared chicken cacciatore – a meal so special she only made it annually. After decorating the tree, the family spent the evening together – enjoying the meal and each other’s company – around the table of her small kitchen. Food was always at the center of our many family gatherings.

Be it for holidays, birthdays or simple gatherings, Vera loved providing for – and simply being around – her family. We are happy at the thought of her forever enjoying delicious meals and time with her beloved husband, siblings and other loved ones who have gone before her. Vera was the first Merced County Court interpreter and worked for many years and was the sister to Frank and Dave Macias, mother-in-law to KoCo Martinez all Merced County Court interpreters.

Vera was also very proud of the many years she spent as the Plant and Personnel Manager at Bianchi & Sons Tomato Packers. During this time, Vera met countless and lifelong friends. She was known as a compassionate leader who would help anyone at a moment’s notice.

One of the many memories she fondly shared was of a young, homeless man whom she met through her work. The man, desperate for work, came in looking for a job. Vera saw something special in this young man and, despite his lack of experience, offered him employment.

Over the years, the young man worked his way up from pushing brooms to becoming a manager. After he left the plant he became even more successful and always kept in touch with Vera. He wanted her to know that he attributed his successes to her belief in him; without her giving him an opportunity he would not have made it.

There are countless stories about Vera that end in the same fashion. She strived to help others and did so with an open and honest heart. The love that she shared with us will always remain in our hearts and thoughts.

Her resolve was strong, her love was deep and our memory of her will last because of the amazing person she was. Although her soul has left Earth, Vera, “Mom,” “Ma,” “Grandma,” “Noni” and “GG” will live on through the 17 members of her immediate family, her many extended family members and countless number of friends. Memoriam will be held at Ivers and Alcorn, Merced, CA.
