Virgil Lee Bruning, 91, of Lenexa, KS, passed away June 11, 2018. Visitation will be 2:00pm Saturday June 16th, followed by a memorial service at 3:00pm celebrating Virgil’s life at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS. Private family burial will follow at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.

Virgil was born June 24, 1926, one of eight children born to Pearl and Anna Bruning of Robinson, KS. He served in the U.S Navy in World War II in the South Pacific. After graduating from the University of Kansas, he was employed by Westinghouse Aircraft Division and retired from The Marley Cooling Tower Company after 36 years.

He married Frances Fridell on September 2, 1950 in Halstead, KS and they spent 67 wonderful years together. Virgil was an active member of the Overland Park Christian Church and was a 32nd Degree Mason. Virgil was preceded in death by one brother, Dwight Bruning; 3 sisters, Charlotte Silva, Ilene Moore, Joan Penick, and a son-in-law, Gregory Bortka.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Frances of Lenexa; a son, Daniel Bruning, MD and his wife, Cynthia Drake, MD, of Lake Lotawana, MO; twin daughters, Lynn Davis and her husband Mike of Lenexa, KS, and Lee Bortka of Overland Park, KS; brothers, Roger (Judy) Bruning of Orrick, MO, Keith (Luz) Bruning of Melbourne, FL; sister, Ruth Sheppard of Birmingham, AL; seven grandchildren: Laine Stobaugh (Jeff), Blake Bruning, Brad Davis (Sarah), Paige Davis, Riley Bortka, Max Bortka, Grant Miner (Jenny); and two great grandchildren: Leo and Layla Miner. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a Memorial Fund at the Overland Park Christian Church or Evergreen Hospice. Fond memories and condolences for the family may be left at www.
