Obituary for Walter Wayne Wolery MD Dr. Walter Wayne Wolery, 93, of Delphos, passed away Wednesday afternoon, August 15, 2018, at Vancrest of Delphos, surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 10, 1925 in Portsmouth to Oren Earl and Marie Garnet (Wanless) Wolery, who both preceded him in death. On July 19, 1946 he married Rosemary (Dawes) Wolery, who preceded him in death on April 30, 2006.
They had been married for 60 years. Dr. Wolery is survived by two sons, Dr. Thomas Wolery of Livermore, California, and Dr. James Scott (Greta) Wolery of Florence, South Carolina; three daughters, Dr. Laura Wolery (John Lanning) of Powell, Suzanne Belanger of South Lyon, Michigan, and Dr. Janet Wolery (Bruce Carder) of Delaware; two brothers, Floyd (Ruth) Wolery of Orient, William (Helen) Wolery of Portsmouth; a sister, Martha ‘Barney’ (Ray) Keller of Wilmington, North Carolina; twelve grandchildren, Tom, Dan and Sam Kelly, Charlotte, Steve, Eric, Megan and Emily Wolery, Jessie and Cadet Lieutenant Andrew Belanger, Nicole (Jamie) Stamant, and Michelle Auwae-Lapilio; two great-grandchildren, Henry and Juliette Stamant; many nieces and nephews and their families; and a special family friend, Elaine Miller of Delphos. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Janice Wolery; four brothers, Michael Wolery, John ‘Joe’ Wolery, James ‘Buddy’ Wolery, and David Wolery; and two sisters, Nancy ‘Nan’ Caseman, and Anna ‘Hoot’ Christman.
Dr. Wolery went to high school in Portsmouth, and joined the Marine Corps at age 17 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was a medic during World War II in the Fourth Marine Division and fought many battles in the Pacific Ocean, Iwo Jima, Tinian, Saipan, Roi, and Marshall Islands. He graduated from the University of Dayton where he met and married Rosemary.
He went on to medical school at The Ohio State University where he graduated in 1955. He did his internship/residency at St. Rita’s Hospital in Lima and then opened a medical practice in Delphos. Dr. Wolery practiced general surgery and family medicine for over 35 years.
He was the team physician for many Delphos sports teams. He was active in the Boy Scouts, having obtained Eagle Scout level. He was honored by Honor Flight Columbus for being a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942-1946.
Dr. Wolery was very active in stamp collecting, donating many items to the Delphos Postal Museum. He helped establish the Delphos Country Club and was on the board of directors at Vancrest. He was a private pilot, scuba diver, fisherman, golfer, and card player.
A celebration of Dr. Walter Wolery’s life will be 12 noon Saturday, September 22 at Weber Funeral Home, 1840 E. Fifth Street, Delphos. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery, followed by military graveside services conducted by the Delphos Veterans Council. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, September 21, and one hour before the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
