Obituary for Wesley “Hotshot” Jacobs Sr. Wesley “Hotshot” Charles Jacobs, Sr. was born on April 10, 1933 in Interior, SD to William III and Lottie Eva (Montileaux) Jacobs, he was the youngest of six siblings. Wesley passed away on September 17, 2018 at his home near Porcupine, SD. Hotshot grew up southwest of Interior on a small homestead where his parents raised their six children.

It was there in the open prairie where Hotshot became a horseman, a cattleman, and learned the skills of his father to become the man he was. He attended high school at Pine Ridge where he represented the Scarlet Warriors and excelled in basketball, football, and track. Hotshot married the love of his life, Carol Mae Pourier on August 15, 1953 in Rapid City, SD.

He was truly devoted to Carol for fifty-four years before he lost her in 2007. Together they had seven children. Pamela Jean, Wesley Charles, Bruce Timothy, James Lewis, William Lorenzo, Lyle Thomas, and Cindy Cher.

The early years of marriage were spent experiencing different regions of the West. He worked at the Black Hills Ordinance Depot in Igloo, SD until 1955, then transferred to the Sioux Ordinance in Sidney, NE. Later he moved his family to Chinle, AZ, then later to Ogden, UT before returning to Igloo, SD in 1961.

In 1962, he began working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Pine Ridge, SD. He retired when he turned in 55 years old on April 10, 1988. Hotshot and Carol set up his own homestead and settled near Porcupine Butte in 1977 where they raised cattle.

He was a passionate fan of rodeo. He followed and supported his kids and others through the ranks of Little Britches, High School, College, Indian Rodeo and Professional Rodeo. He built a rodeo arena on his ranch to promote his love of rodeo and held an annual rodeo each year.

He loved the cowboy way of life and was surley a country gentleman. If anyone met him they never forgot him and came away feeling like old friends. He could always put a smile on people’s faces.

Hotshot was one of the last real cowboys to pass. In his long lifetime he was an outstanding athlete, a rancher, a horseman, an artist, and a craftsman who supplied many cowboys with belts, chaps, head stalls, and reins. There was a time that a belt made by Hotshot was a commodity worn by just about anyone you would meet.

And in the rodeo arena many of those flashy chaps were made by him. He continued to do his leatherwork as recently as a few months ago. He had friends all over the country and would help anyone that he saw that needed a hand whether alongside of the road or in his back yard.

Anyone who ever met him could describe him as a man who had a love for family and friends and who could light up a room with his big smile. Hotshot was one of a kind. He lived his life to the fullest.

He is resting now and leaves a gift of remembrance to all of us. He will be greatly missed. Hotshot is survived by his children, Wesley “Chuck” (Trudy Ecoffey) Jacobs, Jr., James “Jim” (Terry) Jacobs, and Cindy Jacobs all of Porcupine, SD, Bruce “Tim” (Kim Carpio) Jacobs of Rapid City, SD, and Lynda Hamilton of Cleveland, OH; 26 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.

Hotshot was preceded in death by his spouse, Carol Mae (Pourier) Jacobs; parents, William Lorenzo Jacobs and Eva Lottie (Montileaux) Jacobs; daughter, Pamela Jean Jacobs-LeBeaux; sons, Lyle “Tom Tom” Thomas Jacobs, and William “Whopper” Lorenzo Jacobs; brothers, Joseph “Skee” Leroy Jacobs and Frances “Dutch” Earl Jacobs; and sisters, Ethelyn Mae Jacobs-Cass, Caroline “Papoose” Rose Pourier, and Julia “Sister” Lottie Jacobs-Wilson.
