William “Bill” P. Asbury, 76, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Bill was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on February 12, 1942 to Paul and Louise (Criss) Asbury. He was class president of his 1960 graduating class from Sullivan High School.

Bill… Read More » was the fourth generation in his family to become a teacher and he dedicated his life to serving the students of southern Indiana.

Bill’s career spanned over 38 years as economics teacher and athletic director at Central High School. His presence in the halls of Central High School made him a favorite of many students. His dedication as athletic director will be remembered by all who knew Bill, as he was first to arrive and the last to leave Central High School.

He never missed a sporting event at home or away. He was Girl’s Golf Coach, Boy’s Tennis Coach, IHSAA Varsity Official in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was elected “Athletic Director of the Year” and the “Economics Teacher of the Year” in Indiana.

He served on the EVSC school board after his retirement in 2001. He was a member of Indiana High School Athletic Association and Consultant of National Federation of High School’s. As Athletic Director he hosted 116 IHSAA tournaments, including 23 semi-states.

He was an economics lecturer at both the University of Evansville and University of Southern Indiana. He sponsored the Central Honeybears from 1977-1986 with his life-long friend and colleague, David Koehler. Bill’s influence has affected the Evansville area for many years.

Over twenty of Bill’s former students have become teachers with the EVSC and hundreds of his students are working in various careers throughout the world. Bill was a community and civic leader in Evansville. He was inducted into the Southwestern Indiana Business and Education Hall of Fame in 1995.

He served as district governor of Civitan International and president of Evansville West Civitan. As a man of faith, Bill was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. At his church he was session member in charge of the building.

Bill was on Patchwork Central’s board of directors. His favorite pastime was golfing with his friends. Bill’s active life was the way he loved to live.

He touched many people with his generous spirit. William is survived by wife of 53 years, Anne Bauer Asbury of Evansville, IN; sons; John Asbury and his wife, Stephanie, and their children, Ashley, Alex and Blake of Atlanta GA and Joe Asbury and his wife, Lisa, and their children, Addison, Charlotte and Ella of Santa Claus, IN. William was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church, 609 SE 2nd St., Evansville, IN 47713 with Rev. Kevin Fleming officiating. A private burial will be held on Monday, October 8, 2018 at Stephens Cemetery in Lewis, Indiana.

Friends may visit from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church. Condolences may be made online at www.
