William’s Obituary Funeral services for Hugh Howell, 89, of Jayess, MS will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at Magee’s Creek Baptist Church. Burial will be held at Magee’s Creek Cemetery. Mr. Howell passed away in Amite, LA on Sunday, February 3, 2019.

He was born October 19, 1929 in Walthall, Mississippi to the late Nettie and William Clifton Howell. He was also preceded in death by his brother the Reverend Elmer Lee Howell; the mother of his son Dorothy McElveen; and the mother of his daughter June Yarborough Broom. Hugh enlisted in the Army in 1948 where he received training and job stability for someone coming out of high school.

His term of enlistment in the years following the Second World War made him part of the U.S. Occupation Forces stationed in Germany. Howell returned to the states, discharged from the regular Army, but eventually was talked into joining the National Guard. He enlisted in the Guard as a Sargent 1-c.

then got a chance to take a position with the unit as a 2nd lieutenant. As he moved through the ranks, he attended other schools offered by the Army, eventually at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, for Command General Staff College. After building up time in the Army he decided to retire and pursue a business in insurance.

Mr. Howell was also a long-time member of Magee’s Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, on several committees, and fellowshipped with family and friends. Survivors include his son Randy (Regina) Howell; daughter Patricia Thornhill; grandsons Wyatt Howell, Saxon Howell, Lane Burnthorn, Colby Amacker, and Canyon Thornhill; granddaughters Skylar Howell, Brooke Burnthorn, Jade Thornhill; and great-granddaughter Madison Burnthorn. Visitation will be at Hartman-Hughes Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and at Magee’s Creek Baptist Church on February 06, 2019 from 9:00 A.M. until the service at 11:00.
