Sully, as he was known to his friends, was born in Newark on August 4, 1926. He played basketball and baseball at St. Michael’s grammar and high schools in Newark. He enlisted in the Navy Reserve while still in high school and served during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1946 as a member of “the greatest generation”.

He graduated from Seton Hall University in 1951 with a degree in Business Administration. Upon graduation, Sully worked in the insurance industry for over 30 years, retiring as an insurance executive from the Princeton Insurance Company in 1994. Early after retiring, Sully spent time consulting and volunteering at Stella Marris Retreat House in Elberon.

Sully was a proud founding member of the West Orange Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh Club and subsequently helped establish the FSOS Belmar chapter. He loved Ireland and took delight in his many trips to his daughter’s home in County Clare. He was a competitive four-wall hand baller for over thirty years at the Newark, Orange, and Princeton YMCA’s, and was an avid cyclist along the Belmar boardwalk.

He loved the beach and was a constant figure on 20th Avenue . His enthusiastic personality was evident to those who saw him during his weekly trips to the Atlantic Club, as well as friends who enjoyed his rendition of Yankee Doodle Dandy. We loved him so, and he is permanent in our hearts.

Sully was predeceased by his parents, Catherine (Caples) Sullivan and William Sullivan of Newark. He was the beloved husband of the late Agnes Quinn Sullivan. He is survived by his five children, Kathleen Sullivan of Charleston, SC; Marybeth Stuhler (Mike) of East Amherst, NY; Eileen Zalewski (Hank) of Wall, NJ; Theresa Duva (Nick) of Nutley, NJ; and Michael Sullivan of Lake Como, NJ.

He was the proud and loving grandfather of Cory, Kyle, Callan, Casey, Nicholas, Alexander, Olivia, Zachary and Christopher all of whom adored him.
