OBITUARY William R. Smith Jr. August 30, 1927 – November 6, 2018 SMITH, W. “Bob” Robert Jr. – Age 91, of Scituate, MA, formerly of Holliston, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2018. Born in Wisconsin and later moved to Illinois, he was the son of the late W. Robert and Myrtle Smith Sr. Loving father to Christy Thibodeau, husband Michael of Holliston, MA, Douglas Smith, wife Deborah of Marlborough, MA and Sherry Smith of Rockville, MD. Cherished grandfather to Chelsey Blackmore, husband Jesse of Illinois.

He will be lovingly remembered by his beloved spouse of 25 years, Diana “Di” Gleason and her two children and four grandchildren. Bob also survived by Betty Campbell Smith the mother of his children, her sister Lois Murphy and family. Bob served in the United States Navy.

He graduated from Northwestern University in IL. He was recruited by Boston College to be part of the orientation and cane mobility program for the blind. Here, he received his master degree from Boston College.

He also rendered his services to The Carroll Center for the Blind, The Perkins School for the Blind and The Boston Center for Blind Children. Bob had a sense of adventure that led him to live on his boat, the Mandy 2, for 11 years. He obtained his captains license.

Captain Bob set sail with many cruises around Boston Harbor with family and friends. He also enjoyed fishing, kayaking, golfing, traveling, reading, storytelling, motorcycle rides and flying prop planes as a teenager in the skies over Wisconsin with his cousin. His favorite drink was a martini.

A visitation will be held on Saturday November 17, 2018 from 10am -12pm followed by a funeral service in the funeral home chapel at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate, MA. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton, MA.
