Obituary for William Thomas Morton Jr. William Thomas Morton Jr., 87, a lifelong resident of Gardendale, passed away bravely and with dignity after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He left this life surrounded by his loving family, which includes his wife of 67 years, Loretta Doss Morton; his son, Thomas Keith Morton (Sandy); his daughter, Rebecca Morton Brennan (Stephen); his grandchildren, Matt Morton (Erika), Natalie Morton Scott (Johnny), and Stephanie Brennan-Murray (Kenny); and five great-grandchildren. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He began his professional career as a lineman for Southern Bell and he retired 40 years later as an engineer for AT&T. He was the consummate Mr. Fix-it—humbly referring to himself as a “jack of all trades, master of none”. From his love of woodworking to his inherent mechanical skills, such as building his own lawn tractor and a full-size model of a 1910 Oldsmobile, his abilities were many-faceted and were used throughout his life to help others.

He faithfully served his community and church in many capacities, including joyfully devoting countless Tuesdays over many years volunteering at Camp David, his church’s 90-acre camp near Cullman. He loved and supported his family and friends unconditionally, and he will be remembered for his most distinguishing quality, his generous and compassionate spirit. His was a life well-lived.

May he rest in peace. The family wishes to thank his Comfort Care caregivers for their kindness and assistance. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 27, at 12 noon, at The New Gardendale Funeral Home, with burial following at Oakwood Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive visitors from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 26. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (michaeljfox.org); Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (jdrf.org); Gardendale First Baptist Church; or the charity of your choice.
