(Wilma) Joanne Baker January 24, 1928 – February 09, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card (Wilma) Joanne (Black) Baker, a long time resident of Wichita, Kansas passed away Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the Lifecare Center of Burlington Kansas where she had been residing for the last nine years living with Dimentia. She was 91 years old. Joanne was born January 24, 1928 near Toronto, Kansas, the youngest daughter of Viviene Marjorie Schaaf Black and (Myron) Earl Black.

She attended Toronto Schools, graduating in 1946. She attended teacher training school and taught for a short while. Joanne moved to Wichita in her early 20’s and attended Wichita Business College.

There she learned shorthand, typing and everything needed to become an executive secretary. She worked many years for Kaiser Aluminum, which supplied aluminum to the aircraft industry. When Kaiser closed their office in Wichita, she went to work for Boeing Aircraft as a buyer of aluminum.

She loved to stay busy, playing golf, bowling, and socializing. On October 7, 1950, she was united in marriage to Rex E. Baker in Wichita. They had a son, Kerry Brett Baker on October 18, 1951.

They divorced in 1955. She later married Richard R. McIlvain on March 9, 1957 in Wichita. They divorced in 1961.

Joanne was known as “Jodie” to her family, “Jo” to her friends, and she developed the nickname “Jojo” from the loving staff at Life Care. She was a strong, classy woman who provided for herself and loved life. She is survived by her niece, Sharri (Corkery) Fuller and husband Brad, Toronto, KS, her grandchildren, Brett Baker and wife Shannon, Jacksonville, Fl and Shauna Manwell, McAllen, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Leonard Black, sister, Jacqueline (Jackie) Corkery, an infant sister, son, Kerry Brett Baker, Sr., and two grandsons, Kerry Brett Baker, Jr., and Ronald Justin Crumbliss. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 14, 2019, at Campbell Funeral Home in Yates Center. Burial will follow in the Toronto Cemetery near Toronto.

The family will meet with friends from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Life Care Center of Burlington Memory Care Unit and may be sent in care of Campbell Funeral Home, PO Box 188, Yates Center, KS 66783.
