Visitation Friday, March 29, 2019 3-7 PM at Hamp Funeral Home Funeral Mass Saturday, March 30, 2019 10 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Church Albert J. Musone, age 92, of the Town of Tonawanda, died Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. Born February 21, 1927 in Yonkers, New York, he was the son of the late Ralph and Rose (nee DiDonato) Musone. A Navy Veteran of WWII, Albert served in the South Pacific aboard the destroyer, USS Grayson DD435.
Their mission was to accompany and protect a battleship convoy from enemy forces during the invasion of Japan. When the war ended after the atom bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the battleship Missouri continued on with Admiral Nimiz and others to sign the Treaty of Surrender. After discharge from the Navy, he found employment at Grand Central Terminal in New York City as a baggage handler.
He sought other employment and was hired for traffic management. After schooling in transportation,,, he was eventually transferred to Buffalo as Terminal Manager for Oneida Motor Freight, Inc. (a common motor carrier serving 22 states), where he worked for 32 years. The company closed due to deregulation of the industry and he immediately found employment with Overnight Transportation as Operations Manager at their terminal in Carteret, New Jersey.
After three years, he returned to Buffalo as their dispatcher. In 1988, the family purchased a franchise on Transit Road in Williamsville known as Mail Boxes Etc. , which through a stock buyout became The UPS Store.
Albert’s son, Kenneth, is the president and owner of the franchise. About a year after retiring in 1992, Albert found a part-time job with the Town of Tonawanda Parks and Recreation Department, where he worked at their two golf courses, the Paddock Golf Dome, and the Brighton Driving Range. He worked there until his passing.
Albert enjoyed golfing since moving to the Buffalo area. He achieved two holes in one; one at Brighton Golf Course hole #17 and one in Jupiter, Florida at the Jupiter Dunes Golf Course hole #2. He also enjoyed boating, fishing and bowling.
During his 32 years at Oneida Motor Freight, he bowled in the Buffalo Transportation Club bowling league and also the Niagara Falls Traffic Club league. He was a member of both of those organizations, as well as a member of the American Legion Tonawandas Post No. 264, and the Brighton Senior Golf Club.
His most memorable boating experience was when his family took a long planned trip to New York City for the 1976 commemoration of the country’s 200th birthday. With food supplies aboard, the family departed from their home on the Erie Barge Canal in their new 26 ft. Sea Ray and proceeded east hoping to arrive in New York Bay in about a week’s time.
They planned to stay in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey at the home of a family member. On the 2nd night of their trip, while docking at Brewerton, New York, there was a mishap which resulted in a broken leg. The next morning, we boated 50 miles across Lake Oneida to the nearest hospital, which was in Rome, New York, where the leg was set in a cast.
. Albert had no alternative under the circumstances but to return to Buffalo, very disappointed in the outcome. He was the husband of Joan (nee Lazarkwicz) Musone, whom he married on April 25, 1953; father of Kenneth (Andrea) Musone; grandfather of Jennifer Musone and Michael Musone; and brother of Dominic (late Francis) Musone of Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, the late Rita (late Frank) Forte, the late Catherine (late Nick) Russamanno, and the late Ralph (Brenda) Musone of Cumming, Georgia.
