Obituary for Alberta Thompson Alberta L. Thompson, 86, of Seymour died at 10:37 pm Friday, October 26, 2018 at Schneck Memorial Hospital. Born January 27, 1932 in North Vernon, she was the daughter of Raymond and Ethel Jackson Sandefur. She married Leo A. Thompson on June 4 th , 1950 and he preceded her in death on December 6, 2016.

Alberta graduated from Brownstown High School in 1949 and immediately went to work as a legal secretary for Nierman’s Law Office in Brownstown. When Leo was in the military, she traveled with him and lived in California, Rhode Island, and Newfoundland. Upon their return to Seymour, Alberta continued her legal secretary/paralegal profession by working for Taylor Hoffar and later for Roger Pardieck at Montgomery, Elsner & Pardieck.

She retired in 1986 to help care for grandchildren. Alberta and her husband, Leo, were passionate with their time and talents for the Order of the Rainbow for Girls and traveled all over the country attending their functions. Locally, she was Mother Advisor for Seymour Assembly No.

58; regionally, she served as Grand Organizer and Grand Deputy; and on the statewide level, she was Supreme Inspector and a member of the Grand Executive Committee. She was also actively involved on the national level by serving as Grand Parliamentarian and was a lifetime member of the House of Gold. She was awarded the Grand Cross of Color for her service.

Alberta was affectionately known as “Mom Thompson” to all of her Rainbow family. Along with her husband, they influenced untold numbers of young girls to become confident and responsible women. Alberta was a member of Seymour Chapter #134, Order of Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron in 1972.

She was also an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Seymour and had served as Sunday School Teacher and in numerous other positions in the church. She loved reading, working word search puzzles, doing hand crafts (crocheting, sewing, embroidery, etc. ), and spending time with the grand and great-grand children.

In memory of her granddaughter, Alberta and her daughter donated afghans each year to Riley Children’s Hospital or Schneck Medical Center. She also loved animals and was most happy with a cat, dog, or child on her lap. Alberta will be greatly missed by her current doggie companion, Susie.

Survivors include her two children, Vicki (Steve) Otto and Dale (Edie) Thompson; grandchildren: Michael Thompson (Tara Fox), Amanda Thompson, and Matthew Thompson; great-grandchildren: Isaac and Madison Thompson, Shayla and Alexys Thompson, and Katelin Brandenburg; her sisters-in-law, Helen Sipes Lutes and Shirley Sandefur; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her grandchild, Katherine “Kati” Otto; her brothers, Roy Sandefur and Robert “Max” (Yvonne) Sandefur, and her brother-in-law, Allen (Lucille) Thompson. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 1:30 pm from Voss & Sons Funeral Home, Seymour.

Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery immediately following the service. Visitation will be at Voss & Sons Funeral Service on Friday from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. with Eastern Star Services (open to the public) beginning at 7:15 p.m. and Saturday from 12:00 noon until time of service. Memorials may be made to: Indiana Rainbow Girls Foundation or Trinity United Methodist Church Improvement Fund.
