Alfred Moore Perdue, 94, of York, PA, went to his heavenly home surrounded by family on Saturday January 12, 2019 after a short hospitalization and succumbing to complications from pneumonia. Al, as he was known by all, was born August 21, 1924 in his home in Gallatin, Tennessee. He was the second of five children born to the late Gladys (Travelstead) and Robert Perdue.

Al grew up working on his family farm. After high school, Al attended Georgia Tech for one semester until the call to serve led him to the Army Air Corp. Al honorably and proudly served during WW II in the 8th Air Force as a P-51 Mustang and P-38 Lightening pilot stationed in: Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, California and England.

In 1946, Al returned to Georgia Tech to finish his engineering degree. From there, he continued his schooling at Lawrence University earning his degree in paper chemistry. Al spent his career at the Beloit Corp where he excelled.

His career led to a life of travel. Al knew no strangers, only friends he hadn’t met yet. One of those travels led to York, PA where Al met the love of his life, and partner for 55 years, Shirley (Johnson) Perdue.

Together they had two children; Lisa and Scott. Post retirement, Al could most often be found at the Strictly Fitness gym. He was an icon there.

Everyone knew Al and Al knew everyone. When he wasn’t on the treadmill, he was always happy to share a story or two, sit with a cup of coffee, or listen to the latest that was going on in your life. There are two things that Al was most proud of; his service to his country and the land that he loved, and his family.

He was so proud of his five grandchildren; Austin Wright, Alex Wright, Jordan Perdue and his wife, Samantha, Joshua Perdue, and Danielle Perdue as well as his daughter, Lisa Wright and her husband, Jim, and son, Scott Perdue and his wife, Lisa. Those waiting to greet him on his arrival to his heavenly home were both of his parents, his brother, Oscar Perdue and his sister, Vivian Durham. Among family members that mourn the loss of Al include his older sister, Peggy Dickerson, and his younger brother, Dr. Jay Perdue.

A celebration of his life will be held at Living Word Community Church, 2530 Cape Horn Road, Red Lion, PA 17356 on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. The family welcomes visitors prior to the service from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Friday at the church.
