Obituary for Alice Doss McCombs Alice Doss McCombs, 104, was born on April 8, 1914 and went home to be with her Heavenly Father on September 22, 2018. She was called Mama Alice by everyone who knew and loved her. For a lady of such small stature, she had a tremendously big heart.

Serving others was the main focus of her life and what brought her the most joy. Mama Alice was a wonderful cook and shared this gift with both family and friends. Her very favorite place was her yard and until a few months prior to her death was still enjoying the task of cutting grass on her riding lawn mower.

She had a very strong work ethic from the time she was a young child helping her dad as he truck farmed. She worked for Liberty Trouser in Birmingham, for 35 years and upon retirement used her time to minister to others. She was a member of Hughes Memorial Baptist Church, but even more importantly, had accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior.

She chose a humble life of true servanthood and exhibited the characteristics of the Proverbs 31 woman. The legacy she leaves behind is one of love for her God and family. Everyone who knew her was blessed by her life.

Mama Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Cora Doss, her husband, Ray McCombs, two sisters, Ola Mae Richey and Corine Reid, and three brothers, Arvel Doss, Hutchie Doss, and Horace Doss. She is survived by one sister, Annie Merle Gibbons; her four children, Richard (Louise) McCombs, Shirley (Ken) Petty, Freida (Dave) Brown, Carolyn (Glenn) Moore; 10 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 24 great-great grandchildren; and 2 great-great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be Monday, September 24, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at The New Gardendale Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Hughes Memorial Baptist Church with burial to follow Bethel Cemetery. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Alice Doss McCombs please visit our Sympathy Store. Previous Events Visitation , SEP 24.
