Arthur D. Sweeney, 80, of Drums passed away unexpectedly, Sunday, May 13, 2018, at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton. Born in Scranton, PA, May 29, 1937, he was the son of the late Edmund Sweeney and Ruth Hensel Sweeney. He was a graduate of Technical High School, a US Army Veteran and attended Pennsylvania State University.

From 1974 until 2007 he was the proprietor of an architectural practice providing design and consulting services in the Hazleton area, Maryland, Massachusetts, and California. In addition, he was very active in local civic and community organizations including the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, CAN-DO, and Northeast Counseling. As a younger man, he was instrumental in founding the Butler Township Recreation Board, was chairman of the Butler Township Sewer Authority, and was active in the Lions organization.

As a man of deep faith, he was a Eucharistic minister and lector at the now closed St. Nazarius Church, and was currently a member of Good Shepherd RC Church, Drums. Art was an avid golfer, having a hole-in-one in April, 1991 and another in May, 2004, both at the Valley Country Club. He was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

No matter how busy he was, he always had time for his family. His children were the delight of his life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death, by his beloved son, Arthur in 2003; and brothers Dennis and Edmund Sweeney.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Marie, a daughter Cheri Lynn Chisesi and her husband James, Easton; grandchildren Anthony and Aspyn Chisesi; a bother Thomas Sweeney and his wife Barbara, and many nieces and nephews. His funeral will be held Monday with a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in Good Shepherd RC Church, 87 S. Hunter Highway, Drums. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

Friends may call Sunday evening 6-8 pm at Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. (East) 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums. Art was a kind and generous man — play it forward — do and act fo kindness each day — and think of him. Donations in his name may be made to the charity of ones choice.
