Evelyn was born in Centerville, Indiana, to Fred Clifton & Bessie Reagan Buhl Proctor on December 25, 1927. Fred moved his family to Dilley, Texas when she was a young child.

Evelyn attended Southwest Texas Teachers College and obtained her master’s degree. Upon graduation, she moved to Rocksprings to teach home economics. This is where she met her husband, Robert William Cowsert, Sr. (Bobby).

Evelyn and Bobby were married on September 29, 1951. Their first child, Billy Cowsert, was born in Rocksprings on March 31, 1953. The family then moved to New Braunfels where their second child, Debbie (Cowsert) Berger was born on September 28, 1958.

Evelyn taught in New Braunfels ISD and Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD at both the secondary and elementary levels for over 40 years before she retired. While Evelyn and Bobby were always active in their church, Oakwood Baptist, it was in retirement that she was able to pursue her passions more fully. Later in life, Evelyn sang in the choir at First Baptist in New Braunfels.

She enjoyed gardening, building things, sewing, fishing, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly referred to her as “Mama G.” Always a spitfire, Evelyn even decided to change her birthday for several years. She did not like it being on Christmas day because she felt like she spent her whole birthday in the kitchen. Evelyn is survived by her children, Billy Cowsert & wife Joannette of LaVernia; and Debbie Berger of Lincoln; grandchildren, Brandon Cowsert; Courtney (Cowsert) Fikes & husband Austin; Maggie Berger; and Mandy (Berger) Harkrider & husband Tyler; great-grandchildren, Riley & Eli Fikes; sister-in-law, Mildred Proctor of Dilley and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, Fred & Bessie Proctor; her husband, Bobby Cowsert; her son-in-law, Calvin Berger; her brothers, Wayne & Gene Proctor; her in-laws, Tommy & Verna Cowsert; and brother-in-law, Tommy Cowsert, Jr. and wife, Faye. A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, February 22, at 11:00 am at the Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Braunfels. The service will be preceded by a viewing with the family present at 10:00 am.

Memorial donations may be made to Boysville (P.O. Box 369, 8555 E. Loop 1604 North, Converse, Texas 78109-0369).
