GREENFIELD – Asa Samuel Burkett, age 83, of Greenfield, passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Golden LivingCenter – Brandywine. He was born in Parke Co., Indiana on August 23, 1935 to Nelson Burkett and Stella (Maddox) Elsbury. Asa graduated from New Palestine High School in 1955 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955-1959.

He married Janice Marie (Brown) on August 28, 1960 in Greenfield. He was the owner of Downtown Service Center in Greenfield for 28 years. Asa was a member of Bradley United Methodist Church, Greenfield Lions Club, and Hancock Masonic Lodge #101.

He and his wife were both involved in the Greenfield Community Choir for many years. Asa enjoyed bowling, golfing, and walking. He was a coach for the Greenfield Youth Baseball Association.

Asa had a generous heart and loved making people laugh. Asa is survived by his children, Eric Burkett, Medina Burkett, Rodney Burkett and Samantha (Christian) Miller; seven grandchildren, Brandon Scott, Travis Burkett, Tiera Crossman, Paige Rutledge, Masan Miller, Aydan Miller, and Logan Miller; and three great-grandchildren, Landon Burkett, Alayah Crossman, and Payton Crossman; and siblings, John Burkett, Norma Rockey, Thelma Rockey, and Charolette Pike. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janice Burkett; sister, Betty Bush; and granddaughter, Grace Elizabeth Miller.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will take place immediately following the visitation at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Larry Fannin will be officiating.

Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield with military rites presented by the Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made by mail to the Alzheimer’s Association, 50 E. 91st St. #100, Indianapolis, IN 46240 or envelopes will be available at the mortuary.
