Barbara Kay Kimmel, 79, of West Burlington, died at 6:12 am Thursday, February 14, 2019, at the Burlington Care Center. Born April 3, 1939, she was the daughter of Margaret Landers Kemp and (step-father) Rawson “Bill” Kemp. On October 8, 1961, she married George in Christian Church in Lomax, IL.

Barbara worked at Champion Spark Plug for 33 1/2 years before retiring. She was a 1957 graduate from Stronghurst High School. Barbara loved horses and would ride show horses until she couldn’t get her feet in the stirrups anymore.

When she couldn’t ride anymore, she kept raising and training them. She also loved dogs; mainly Dobermans, cooking, hosting all the holiday meals, fitness and family. Barbara loved George most of all.

People would say that they were the model for love. Survivors include husband, George Kimmel, nephew, Tony (Deb) Mattson of Oskaloosa, niece, Paula (Andy) Morrell of Bull Head City, AZ and numerous other nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her brother, Edger Paul Mattson Jr. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM with the family to receive friends Saturday, February 23, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Barbara will be 11:00 AM Saturday, February 23, 2019, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Elizabeth Bell officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the Fellowship Hall at West Burlington United Methodist Church following the service. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory following the service.

Burial will be in Carman Cemetery at a later date. Memorials have been established for the Great River Hospice House and West Burlington United Methodist Church.
