Beatrice Mitman passed away peacefully on August 27th, 2018 in Issaquah WA at the age of 84. She was born on December 17, 1933 in Riga Latvia to Helen (Resko) and Alexander Rossini. During WWII, the family’s home and business in Riga was confiscated and they were moved to a refugee camp in Germany.

Being a bright young woman, Beatrice was able to obtain a position as a translator for the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) that eventually helped her immigrate to the United States. At age 16, Beatrice arrived in New York City alone on a refugee ship where she was cared for by her Aunt Tamara. Shortly thereafter she was reunited with her Mother, step-father George Lelukewitsch, sister and brother-in-law Angelika and Werner Appel.

Beatrice finished high school in New York City and then attended Columbia University. At Columbia she met her future husband, David Mitman, and they married in 1955. Several years later they moved to Detroit, where Beatrice resided until 1995, when she moved to Bellevue, WA.

During her time in Detroit, Beatrice raised three children and was active in a large city choir and also became a leader of her daughter’s Camp Fire Girls group. When the children were older, she returned to school and obtained her B.A. Degree in Accounting, and then began her career as a Certified Public Account. Beatrice lived and worked in Bellevue and finally retired from accounting in 2017 when she moved to the University House in Issaquah.

Beatrice was very active and made many friends during her time in Bellevue. She joined the Bellevue Sister Cities Association, which has a sister city in her home country of Latvia, and eventually served as its President. She was able to travel to the sister cities as an emissary and also host young people during their summer student exchange program.

Her passion was world travel and during the last 20 years of her life she visited every continent except for Antarctica. When she was not traveling, she loved to attend the symphony, opera and the theatre with her friends and family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and always put her children’s interests before her own.

Beatrice’s outlook on life was eternally optimistic and she always saw the good in everyone she encountered in life. She was loved dearly by her family and friends and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her children Cynthia Silverstein, Mark (Julie) and Don (Angela).

She has four grandchildren Justin (Celine), Blake, Melina Silverstein, and Sierra Bevis and one great-grandson Anton Mitman. Please join us for a Celebration of Life from 1:00-4:00 PM on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Pogacha Restaurant, 120 NW Gilman Blvd. , Issaquah, WA.
