“Bubba” Charles’ Obituary Charles William Conway Sr., 63, known by his family and friends as “Bubba”, was born April 29, 1955 in Phoenix, Arizona to Helen Maxfield Conway and Johnnie Conway, Sr He departed this life on Monday, November 6, 2018 with his sister Helen at his bedside. Bubba lived in Phoenix, Arizona until the age of six when the family moved to Washington, Arkansas in 1961.
He spent most of his young adult life in Washington until he moved to Hope in 1972 where he would remain until his sunset. Bubba received his Christian foundation and baptism at his family’s church in Washington, AR at Brown Chapel Church of Christ as a child. Bubba received his early education in the Washington and Hope Public School systems.
He was a very skilled and devoted worker to any job he had. He worked for Tyson Foods as a crew leader for over 20 years. For the last 17 years, he worked at the Langston Lumber Yard, but had to resign due to his failing health.
Bubba leaves to cherish his memory seven children; sons Lieutenant Colonel Charles William Conway Jr. (Gennelle) of San Antonio, Texas, Steffon Horton (Sheila) of Little Rock, Arkansas, Antonio Conway (Terri) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Johnny Conway (Jasmine) of Dallas, Texas, and Dontrell Richards of Hope, Arkansas; daughters, Latonya Conway-Wesley of Lonoke, Arkansas and Fretricia Gulley (Derrick) of Texarkana, Texas. Bonded sons Odell Gulley Jr., Jamarcus Mercer, and Allen Mercer Jr. and bonded daughters Angela Smith , Courtney Mercer-Aikens, and Taneeka Adams whom he helped raise; two brothers Johnnie Conway, Jr (Doris) and David Conway (Quila) of Hope, Arkansas; five sisters Sealie Mae Hubbard of Piqua, Ohio, Willie Mae Epps of Saint Marys, Georgia, Thelma Enis (Lincoln) of Greenville, Ohio, Jennie Conway of Jonesboro, Georgia, and Helen Conway (Willie Lee) of Hope, Arkansas. His eleven grandchildren; Tarrale, Kimistri, Cytois, Laquashia, Ja’Brea, Nicholas, Jaeda, Antiono Jr., Prosperity, Caleb, Ryen,; and three great grandchildren D’Nyla, Ava, and Braelyn.
And a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom he would do anything for whenever they needed him. He was preceded in death by his mother Helen, father Johnnie, and brothers Charlie Conway, Willie Charles Conway, Cleothes Conway Sr., and Fredrick Conway. Bubba loved his family especially his children and siblings.
He was a man of great stature who would do any and everything to make you smile even if it meant giving you his last dime. He had a way of making everyone around him happy and feel better with his huge smile and humorous character. His infectious, kind, caring and aiding spirit lead to him being loved by all who knew him and those who did not, but needed his assistance.
He was definitely everyone’s Uncle Bubba. Bubba enjoyed fishing with his buddies and watching football games. He was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan.
He would always say “ wait ,you will see” meaning that someday they would eventually get better and regain the stardom of the past. He was a dancing machine…. .
A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 am. , at Rising Star Baptist Church, in Hope, Arkansas, with Reverend Byron L. Calhoun, pastor of St. John Baptist Church in Lonoke, Arkansas, delivering his eulogy. His earthly body will be laid to rest at Moss Cemetery in Washington, Arkansas.
Family hour will be held from 5:00 – 6:00 pm. and public visitation will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, on Friday, November 16, 2018, at Brandon’s Mortuary in Hope.
