Obituary of Carl E. Culbertson Carl Edwin Culbertson, age 98, from Marion, died at 1:56 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at Marion General Hospital. He was born in Grant County on January 17, 1921, to the late Harry and Mary (Campbell) Culbertson. Carl was a lifelong resident of Marion.

He went to Roosevelt Elementary School and graduated from Marion High School in 1939. He married Catherine Leamon on September 20, 1941, and she passed away on July 8, 1975. He then married Theatta Liestenfelt on March 20, 1976, and they would have celebrated 43 years of marriage this year.

Carl was a mail carrier for the Marion Post Office for 32 years, retiring in October of 1986, and was a 50-year member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. After retirement, he enjoyed driving for Cornerstone Health Center. He was a leather cutter for 13 years at Indianapolis Glove Factory (Marion) and formerly worked part-time at Haisley DX Service Station.

For over 60 years, Carl was a member of South Marion Friends Church, where he served faithfully as Sunday School Secretary, Usher, and Trustee. He loved keeping the church shrubs trimmed, as well as doing other things around the church. He served as Sunday School class treasurer for several years.

Carl loved to sing, especially with the South Marion Friends Men’s Glee Club. He also enjoyed working on word search puzzles. During his bowling days, he bowled a 268, which got him a high single game score in Indiana State Seniors Bowling Tournament in 1977.

He and Theatta enjoyed camping in the Indiana State Parks, going to the Cincinnati Reds ballgames, and walking the Mackinaw bridge in Michigan on Labor Day. In addition to his wife, Theatta, he is survived by 2 grandchildren: Dale (Jena) Lawson, Wausau, WI, and Jill (Joe) Cooper, Upland; 4 great-grandchildren: Jenessa (Jason) Stromberger, Jory (Emma) Lawson, Mary (Evan) Akers, and Zachary (Elizabeth) Planck; and 7 great-great-grandchildren: Kenslie Stromberger; Trigg Lawson; Caroline, Samuel, Amelia, and William Akers; and John Planck. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Catherine; sister, Milla Culbertson; and daughter, Jeannie Elliott.

The family will receive visitors from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2019, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave. , Marion, IN. Carl’s funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2019, at the funeral home.

Pastor John Petty will be officiating with burial following at Grant Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be directed to South Marion Friends Church, 5308 S. Harmon St., Marion, IN 46953. Funds received will go towards a new HVAC system.
