Carol Ann (Welch) Meehan, 83, died of ovarian cancer on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 surrounded by family in the comfort of her Scarborough home. She was born on March 4, 1935 at Queens Hospital in Portland, Maine. The daughter of Anna M. (Jacobs) Welch and William H. Welch.
Carol Ann graduated from Portland High School in 1953, where she was a cheerleader and class secretary for 4 years. She was a graduate of Northeast Business College and worked as an Executive Secretary for the Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce. In 1955 she married Don Feeney and was blessed with a son, Dennis Feeney in 1961.
When Dennis entered nursery school, Carol Ann returned to work in the Westbrook School System (Canal, Congin, and Prides Corner schools) as an administrator until she retired at age 70. In 1985, after 30 years of marriage Don and Carol Ann divorced. She met Thomas Meehan and remarried in 1989.
She was the widow of Tom Meehan who died in 1990. As a child Carol Ann spent summers exploring Peaks Island and as an adult she explored the world. Her insatiable love for all things cultural lead her on many exciting adventures, too many to name, but some of her favorites included Italy, Russia, Thailand and Croatia.
She was inspired by the visual arts, particularly the work of local Maine artists and enjoyed classical music. She was an avid reader. If you asked for her favorite genres she would tell you she loved all books equally.
On many a summer day, she could be found at Ferry Beach, enjoying a good book and great friends. Carol Ann was intensely interested in people and had a way of making all feel welcome. She was a pioneer and a woman before her time, she was “the most interesting woman in the world”.
She will be remembered by all that knew her as adventurous, full of life and love. Carol Ann will be missed and is survived by: her son, Dennis Feeney and his wife, Antoinette of Old Orchard Beach; sister Joan M. (Welch) Rice of Norwell, Massachusetts; brother Bill Welch and his wife Maureen of South Portland; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Antoinette for her loving attention and care.
We would also express our gratitude to Dr. Jason Lachance and the caring staff and Maine Medical Center. All friends and family are invited to a celebration of Carol Ann’s life. Please join us from 5-8pm at The Saltwater Grill, 231 Front St. South Portland, Maine on Friday May 25, 2018.
