Mr. Stewart of Augusta, Georgia entered into his eternal rest on January 23, 2019, at the age of 97. Services will be held in the Chapel at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, Saturday, February 2, 2019, at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Mark Maund officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the chapel and burial will be in Macon, GA. at Riverside Cemetery (old section) at 3:00 P.M. Pallbearers will be Christopher L. Dupree, Kevin Collins, John Stewart, Daniel Stewart, Adam Clark, and Daniel Clark. He was born on May 11, 1921 in Macon, Georgia, to Ella Willis Stewart and Charles Adolph Stewart, sr.
He was predeceased in death by his parents and his wife of 72 years Martha Sue Bryant Stewart. He is survived by one brother John F. Stewart, one daughter Barbara Abair (Garry) of Dallas, Georgia, one son Charles A. Stewart III (Rita) of Augusta, grandsons: Christopher L. Dupree (Michelle) of Kennesaw, GA, Dr. John G. Stewart (Mallory), Daniel W. Stewart (Catherine), Adam S. Clark (Maggie), Daniel P. Clark (Bonnie), granddaughters: Suzanne D. Collins (Kevin) of Pendleton, SC, Gwen Raake (Phil), Kim Morris (Trey), Nicole Pike and 25 great-grandchildren plus several nieces and nephews. Mr. Stewart served in the Merchant Marines during World War II on board the S.S. Moina Michael as a radio operator.
The ship was named for Ms. Michael who was known as the Poppy Lady and taught at UGA for many years. Mr. Stewart retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company after 40 years of service. He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 75 years and was Past Master of Mable Lodge #255.
He was a 33rd degree mason and was a member of the Al Sihah Shriners of Macon. Because of his changing job responsibilities, it was necessary to move his family several times during his career. The first move was to Decatur, Georgia, then to LaGrange, and on to Augusta before moving to Conyers where he and Sue lived for 34 years.
While in Conyers he and Sue were members of the First United Methodist Church and the Maxwell Sunday School Class. They enjoyed a life of traveling, playing golf and having special family times. In 2006 they moved back to Augusta where they joined St. John United Methodist Church.
