Charles attended high school in Wewoka, Oklahoma. Shortly after graduation, Charles went to OSU in Okmulgee and received an associates degree in Business Marketing and Management.

Charles joined the United States Army, where he served for a little over two years. Upon his return, Charles worked for the Oklahoma City Police Department for four years. In 1981, Charles and his family moved to California and returned back to Oklahoma City six years later, where he worked as a police officer for OU Medical until his retirement in September 2014 God called Charles home on September 24th, 2018.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Nahum and Roberta Bruner, brothers Oscar and Glenn Bruner, and sisterin-law, Norma Crofton-Walker. Charles is survived by his wife, Barbara S. Crofton-Bruner of 45 years and their three children, Carla D Bruner (Robert), Isaac D. Batson, and Charles Bruner II (Shakyla). Remaining survivors include his ten grandchildren, sisters (Lovell, Lovonne, and Lenetta), brothers (Richard, Hiawatha, and Steven), and many other family and friends.
