OBITUARY Charles Clifford Plunkett October 16, 1929 – July 20, 2018 Charles Clifford Plunkett, 88, of Westminster Canterbury died July 20, 2018. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, June Ellen Staton Plunkett. Born in Lynchburg, October 16, 1929, he was the son of the late Jane Warren Lee Plunkett and Robert McDearmon Plunkett.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Rev. Edward A. Plunkett and Dr. Robert L. Plunkett; his sisters, Frances Plunkett Harvey and Jane Warren Plunkett; his half-sister, Yvonne Plunkett Poston and a beloved son-in-law, Bruce St. Clair. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Donna St.Clair of Forest, Ellen Mitchell and her husband David of Columbia, SC and Amy Moorehead and her husband Bryan of Waxhaw, NC; a sister, Katie Plunkett Wooldridge Beaver of Roanoke and a half-sister, Linda Davis and her husband Harry of South Boston; three granddaughters, Meredith Nance of Castle Rock, CO, Lydia English of Clayton, NC and Erin Mitchell of Columbia, SC; two grandsons, Tyler and Bradley Moorehead of Waxhaw, NC; three great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Charles graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1947 and was the valedictorian of the Lynchburg College Class of 1957 (Magna Cum Laude, Phi Kappa Phi). He served in the US Navy from 1950 – 1954 aboard the heavy cruiser USS Los Angeles and the destroyer USS Perkins during the Korean War and achieved the rate of First Class Petty Officer. He retired from Babcock and Wilcox (BWXT) after 37 years in contract/project management and quality assurance management.
Charles was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church. He taught Sunday school and sang in the choir throughout his adult life. He also supported public schools, serving as PTA/PTO president at four different Lynchburg schools, and serving as president of the first Choir Boosters Club at Heritage high School.
While living in Southport, NC, he served as secretary of the Lions Club for six years, was chairman of the Methodist Church Board of Trustees, was Vice-Chairman of the Brunswick County Democratic Party, and was a member of the NC Democratic Executive Committee. He also volunteered at the food pantry and served on the Homeless Shelter Task Force, the Brunswick County 20-year plan task force and a Brunswick County planning task force. After moving to Westminster Canterbury in 2012, Charles and June entertained the residents (and elsewhere) by producing, directing and performing musical shows in several different genres.
Charlie loved impersonating Willie Nelson with June on the piano. Two of their biggest successes were “Blue Ridge Jamborees” with a cast of forty residents, staff and friends. Charles and June were also members of Fort Hill United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Westminster Canterbury Fellowship Fund, 501 VES Rd. , Lynchburg, VA 24503. Arrangements are incomplete and service times will be published soon.
