The final resting place for Mrs. Vanderson will be Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, MI. Mother Core Lee (Allen) Vanderson went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at Hurley Medical Center. Mother Vanderson was born August 9, 1929, to Jack and Getty (Smith) Allen in Hamburg, Mississippi, the second oldest of seven children.

She attended Bethlehem and Franklin County Schools in Mississippi. At a young age, she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Mississippi. Cora Lee Allen and Edward R. Vanderson were married on February 12, 1951, in Roxie, Mississippi.

They moved to Flint, Michigan for a better life where she completed her Nurse Aide certification. Until her illness, Mother Vanderson was a dedicated member of Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle, Flint, Michigan, under the leadership of Rev. A. J. Pointer.

She was a member of the Senior Choir and served in the kitchen committee. She was also a member of the Great Lakes District Choir and Oak Park Neighborhood Block Club. Mother Vanderson’s faith in God was unquestionable and faith gave her the strength to endure the trials and tribulations of her life.

Mother Vanderson was a homemaker, hard worker, great cook, and generous person. Her home was an unofficial daycare center for family and friends. She was employed by Smith-Bridgman Co., and Kith Haven.

Often she would tell stories about working in the unbearable hot Mississippi cotton fields. Every holiday, for hours, from scratch, she would cook massive beautiful delicious meals of greens, cornbread dressing, cakes and pies, chicken and dumplings, chitterlings, ham, etc. Mother Vanderson would share plates full of her feast, wrapped in foil, for neighbors and friends who were sick and shut in, or, those who just wanted to eat!

She expressed her love and kindness with food. Mother Vanderson enjoyed bowling, gardening, and hand piece quilting. One of her hand stitched quilts traveled with the African American Quiltmaking in the Michigan tour.

She learned how to make quilts by watching her mother and aunt. The quilts were used for warmth during those few chilly Mississippi nights. She made quilts for her children, grandchildren and her honorary daughter, the late Debra Banks.

Mother Vanderson was a provider and if she made it, she shared it. Mother Vanderson leaves in God’s care: husband of 67 years, Edward R.
